Aside from having to cover a face directly, i'm pretty sure the burka is remarkable light and allows for the passage of wind through it to cool you off. It also protects your skin from the sun.

Being forced to wear one is horseshit, but they do serve a purpose for environmental protection.

Burka isn't even compulsory in Islam. Its a cultural thing.

Some hadith's and scholars say its compulsory but as far as I know, the Quran doesn't specifically state that you need to cover your hair and face.

There were people defending the notion when that Huffington Post article was circulating the internet. I don't keep a spreadsheet of who says what, but it definitely happened. And there are plenty on the left who buy into that kind of insane dogma.

It's not popular to outright say that it's a requirement, but if you immerse yourself in Islamic apologetics and the Quran you'll see that the narrative IS that a Muslim woman needs to wear a hijab at minimum and more depending on the context. It's not optional, and anyone saying otherwise is just trying to save face because of the secular climate.

It is optional though since Islam is a fairytale and there are non-fundamental Muslims who live in civilized nations where Islam has no power to tell people what to do.

Unless its an insanely backwards country like Saudi Arabia, I'm pretty sure females realize the only time they have to cover their head is during prayer.

I have many Muslim friends, most who don't wear hijabs, some who do, and even one that decided to starting wearing a hijab (She's 23).. It was very beautiful and inspirational when she was explaining her reasons.
