The animation was awesome for its time but then I realize as dark and as mature as they tried to make the show it was still very much a kid's show.

I always loved how dumb Rhino was. Spider-man tells him in one episode that he's Mysterio in disguise, and Rhino believes him.

Loved that show. I was watching some old clips recently and I love how Alien Costume Part 2 ends with Venom busting the clock tower wall and you see his shadowy silouhette.

It was kinda frightening to me as a kid because Spider-Man didn't have that kind of power.

Yeah, censorship was seemingly much more strict back then.

Still ended up being a great show with interesting storylines and numerous guest spots. Sucks how it got cancelled on a cliffhanger though.

Yeah, I was.

It had great adaptations of Venom, Rhino, the Lizard, Hobgoblin, Kingpin ("Mr. Smythe!"), and Mary Jane Watson. As a kid, I definitely liked it more than Batman, The Animated Series. It was brighter, more fun, and had more imaginative foes.

My only nitpick was that Peter Parker looked like a jock despite everyone treating him like a scrawny nerd. Not even the censorship bothered me that much. I caught on at one point as a child that nobody ever landed a punch in that show (there were two exceptions), but it's not like it was as bad as the internet made it out to be.

They wanted to have a vampire character, but he had to drink "plasma" out of suckers on his hands.

Fuck yeah. Watched it every morning (replays obviously) before High School at like 6 am, then they showed Spiderman and his Amazing Friends with Firestar and Silver Surfer.

But I did also watch it during it's original run.

Was just cash, because I had a friend who also watched it before High School at 6 am - 7 am and we would have deep discussions about each episode.

Nostalgia. :'|

From what I remember, the police officers looked more like something out of Starship Troopers than they did officers in blue. Spider-Man wasn't set in the future, per se, but they had a world where advanced technology was the norm. Nobody batted an eye over gamma radiation testing, mechanical arms, hover chairs, etc. So, complaining about the police having lasers is a bit like complaining about the cast of Star Trek having lasers.

I will grant you that they botched it with Mobius. I didn't mind the plasma claim. I just thought that was a case of Our Vampires Are Different. Just looking at the guy, it's pretty clear that he's a comic book vampire and not something out of a Christopher Lee movie. So, I wouldn't have been surprised in the slighted if the comic book Mobius sucked plasma from the body rather than blood. But when they kept saying "like the vampire bat," that called attention to the censorship.

I loved it as a kid. I re-watched it a few years ago and still liked it. The censorship didn't bother me that much honestly. It was funny to me that only one punch was thrown throughout the entire show.

There were actually two punches landed. When Spider-Man "hit the Spot" and when a mutated Smythe punched Kingpin in the stomach.

Hmm, I don't remember the Smythe one for some reason. I stand corrected then.

Also, ha ha, that pun. I never caught that

When punches are mostly absent from the fight scenes, it's pretty easy to miss a random gut shot.

On an unrelated note, I remember the toy for the mutant Smythe came out like a full year before he transformed in the cartoon show.

The animation was actually pretty bad. It must have run at like 10 fps, they were clearly computer drawn and you could see many jaggies at times, and about 30% of the show was recycled animations from other episodes.
