Uh no, that game was one of a kind back in the 90's. And it has aged just fine. Guards still react to gunfire, for instance.

Having had a chance to play it recently, I'm guessing it must've been amazing back in 1997. Today, it's a decent game, if you can overcome the blurry visuals, clunky controls, poor framerate, and on some levels, an endless army constantly disrupting your (frantic) search for an elusive mission objective.

it was amazing. it's still fun but doesn't hold up to any of the new shooters since it's so primitive.

What made Goldeneye popular and influential was that it had split screen multiplayer on a console. Up until then playing other people in shooters involved multiple computers and a LAN party. Goldeneye made multiplayer FPS accessible for the average gamer. It is one of the main reasons FPSs are so popular today.

That said, the game mechanics weren't great and the controls were bad, so it didn't hold up so well.

Goldeneye was the most innovative FPS of the day. Invented polygonal guns for the first person view (unlike the Doom sprite guns of PC games), invented spawn camping (love it or hate it), pioneered local FPS multiplayer, and evolved the mission structure of the FPS genre by allowing for complex mission objectives -- paving the way for the modern FPS.

What I enjoyed about the game, was that the objectives were different in each difficulty. On the easiest, it was pretty much "get to the end of the level" and in the hardest you had a load of things to do first to get there.
I don't remember any other game doing that, no matter the genre.

It hasn't aged well, but it was great back then. There is still fun to be had with it.

I do find it funny how much CE shits on Goldeneye but still hails Morrowind as being perfectly fine, though.

Questions like this are blatantly ignorant of how these games were received and shaped the industry. And it's a stupidly generic criticism to levy on something popular. Burden of proof falls on the critic. So tell us why you'd even think to ask a question like this rather than expect people to defend something that's already more than spoken for itself.

This is a stupid topic. The game was revolutionary at the time, and at its peak was one of the best multiplayer experiencs available.

Sure, it's aged like shit. Hell it may have aged worse than any classic out there, but you can say that about a ton of N64/PSX games. That doesn't take away from the fact the game is a classic.

GoldenEye was fantastic when it came out. I don't regret all those hours I spent playing it with my friends. It's not as good as the current top shooters, but it's a silly comparison because of the 20 year gap.

There was lots of subtle little things that made multiplayer fun including level and weapon design. I remember skeet-shooting competitions with my buddies involving the Grenade Launcher and scoped weapons. Or proximity mines on instant-death mode. Even better, slappers only on instant-death mode. Good times.

Avid Goldeneye player here...

by Avid, I had 100%'d everything, and 3 of my friends and I had spent at least 500 hours playing Multiplayer.

So, over-rated at the time? No.

There was so much it introduced, and the multi-player brought forth and entire generation of couch gaming in which the closest you could get were 2-5 games on the SNES in America (after getting the multi-tap and convincing your friends Secret of Mana wasn't a nerd game).

It had a big influence on the future of gaming.

But today? Its awful. Even nostalgia doesn't make it enjoyable...

The fan made Goldeneye on PC though, that is the sex!
