First time I saw the sunrise in Oblivion. Aside from the characters, that game was beautiful.

Nirn itself did scream in the Mages' and Necromancers' war.

MGS2 on ps2
Mgs4 on ps3

I remember before MGS2 came out and it was revealed you could shoot glasses at the bar or books on the shelf. That blew me away.

Luigi's Mansion, oddly enough.

Didn't have a lot of money in the early 2000's (We weren't poor, but we weren't doing great) so I owned and still bought new N64 games as late as 2002.

Remember playing a demo of LM at Costco and my mind being blown at the difference between Mario Party 3 and Lugi's Mansion. Literally light years apart in the span of only a few months of real world time. 9 year old me couldn't deal.

First I remember being blown away was Shadow of the Colossus on PS2. Then a few years later, the first boss in God of War 3 dropped my jaw with the water weaving around everywhere.

The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.

For me, it's FFX. For me, this is when game graphics really started looking good, and I was floored at how good things looked. I didn't have much money for games, so I was always a gen behind in games. So when FFX was out, I was playing FF7-FF9. In my mind, PS2 was this gaming powerhouse, and FFX was the pinnacle of graphics.

I also thought FMV cinematics were uncanny valley territory.

All of this is true, word for word for me. I remember explicitly wondering whether graphics could even get better than they were in the FMVs in FFX

2. Okami on the PS2
3. Fallout 3 on the PS3 (menu size got me to buy an hd tv for my PS3, and the difference was jaw dropping).

I remember this feeling with FFX, Doom 3, and Oblivion (sans the hideous characters).

Morrowind had really good water graphics when it came out, so that aspect of it was a bit crazy.

The first time I actually remember being floored by a game's graphics was the transitions from CG to in-game in Final Fantasy VIII, the most memorable being when the SeeD ships landed on the Dollet Beach. I mean, now-a-days it doesn't look that great and the seam between the two is really obvious, but as a dumb 15 year old used to stuff at the time like Lunar and Star Ocean it really wowed me.

You'll laugh, but Super Mario Galaxy.

It's mostly because of the art direction. There were certain sights in the game that just gave me a huge smile on my face. Most notable one was that stage where you first fight that lava octopus boss. When you get up to the top of the planetoid, see the sun in the distance and the light shimmering on the hardened lava, that was such a sight.

Super Mario World and F-Zero probably.

Before that my first games were Super Mario Bros, arcade games, Atari and SMB3. I remember the commercials for the SNES and even though I was 8-9 years old I could immediately see the jump from what I was used to. The colors, clarity of the spites and richness of it all was a wonder to see.

After that it would have to be things like Doom, Star Fox, Donkey Kong Country and ESPECIALLY Killer Instinct in the Arcade. Also Super Mario 64 that truly blew me away.

It wasn't a game, but FF: The Spirits Within. I remember at the time, everybody ranting and raving about how amazing it was, how the characters looked just like real people, you could hardly tell the difference. I saw posters, and I agreed.

Looking back, that movie looked pretty bad. I think the PS3/360 was capable of similar or better graphics for pre-rendered cutscenes. And now we're getting to the point that that movie looks like PS4/XBone gameplay. It's pretty crazy.
