I can believe that. I met some college students who had never watched Lord of the Rings and didn't know what The Matrix is. All pop references went straight over their heads. The worst (IMO) are the people who have no absolutely no clue what happened on 9/11. I didn't think that was possible, but there are people who live enjoyable lives without ever reading or watching the news. On second thought, maybe that's why it's enjoyable.

How many people do you think pay attention to people who speak at the UN? Probably very few.

Tons of people show up on TV shows, that doesn't mean they're memorable to the general public.

Outside of would-be social activists on twitter and game developers trying to not get her and games journalists shitting on their game, I don't think she has much of an audience. I mean, I think most of the coverage regarding her has next to nothing to do with the content she produces and more to do with "Some people said mean things to her on the internet. Women have it so hard. Be sympathetic."

you gotta understand that for a lot of these forum-gamer dudes, whose list of hobbies pretty much start and end at "post about the intersection of video games and politics online", this is literally the only thing happening in the world to them. it's the filter through which they interpret all other news and they don't have much else in their lives to distract them from it.

The only real thing to do is either get her name out of your vocabulary or make sure her name becomes synonymous with con artist.

I used to actually watch TED talks fairly regularly, but I lost interest in that some time ago. I couldn't tell you any of the speakers at the UN and I couldn't name any guests on the Colbert Report.

However, of the people that do know of Sarkeesian, I think a lot of them were aware of her before Gamergate, because she got the bulk of her attention before Gamergate happened. She got popular because some games journalists wanted to take up for the lady who was getting shit on for her kickstarter.
