I liked it a lot. It surprised me, I wasn't expecting to like the whole "oh no, our ship crashed on a hostile alien world! we gotta fight for our lives!" plot but it was a pretty good adventure.

Definitely worth watching, especially after the pristine sterility of Into Darkness.

They saved the day by playing the Beastie Boys' song "Sabotage".

That solidified the movie being great for me.
Plus, I normally have zero interest in anything Star Trek related. Went to see it with some friends and we loved it.

Into the Darkness > Star Trek >>> Beyond. However, Beyond was still quite good.

Beyond was at least an orginal story, unlike the rehash that was Into Darkness. Although Beyond suffers from a cringe worthy moment that even made George Takei roll his eyes.

How. It was a very brief moment. Takei said he didn't like it because it was a departure from how the character was by the original creators. Then he was reminded that the new films are set in a completely different universe. Besides, it was done as a tribute to him.

I liked it. it was better than the first two imo

the biggest problem it faced is one every star trek film will face: it's better as a show than a movie

Huh. I honestly thought the first one was great.

i've been meaning to rewatch them all now that beyond is up on amazon prime, so you might be right

I like them all, but I bet it'll be a close one between the first one and beyond

Besides, it was done as a tribute to him.
But is it really? When you think about it, it's kind of insulting. It's like Takei is gay so clearly the characters he plays must be gay too. Are we now saying that Takei isn't able to play a straight man? Or the orginal character of sulu was trapped in the closet? Clearly Takei himself didn't see it as a "tribute." It's like one of these white knight gestures that people use to pat themselves on the back and tell themselves what a great person they are. "I'm going to make Sulu gay. What a great friend to the LGBQT community I am. I'm a champion of gay rights." Meanwhile the actual gay guy is sitting in the corner going "Um, what?"
Way to make a mountain out of an ant hill. The filmmakers made it as a nod to Takei and he just didn't take it that way. It's that simple. His argument as to why he didn't like it was met with a reasonable rebuttal that he ended up accepting. But you know, you left out the rest of my post where I already explained that. Either way, that little scene hardly made the movie suffer in any way.

Beyond >> 09 > Into Darkness

Much better than the first 2 imo. Still flawed, not great, but very enjoyable.

Compared to the series it's mindless dog shit. If you just wanna switch your mind off and watch an action flick with flashing lights, bad characters and good music, it's pretty good.

It was dang-near MST3K bad IMO.

In fairness the first half-hour was great but then the villain shows up and it just loses all coherence.

How does the crew of one star ship grow to billions of people in 200 years? How does a society that extends their lifespans by killing each other grow in population at all? Why did they forget where their star ship was? Why didn't they take the motorcycle? How does the Enterprise's curved top dish thing slam flat to the ground when they flipped it? Why did the writer/director decide to prove the villain right by using one ship to chain-react destroy his billions of tiny ships, using their communication channels as the chain-reaction agency? Why does a guy whose ideology is summed up as "unity is weakness" even use this strategy in the first place? Why do we never get an explanation as to why they were able to pierce the Enterprise's shield? Why don't the nanobots attack Kirk when he goes into the air chamber with them? Why didn't they disperse when they routed the air in the chamber through the colony's atmosphere to emergency vent it? Why is this their emergency vent strategy in the first place? How do people walk on both sides of those tower things? Why why whyyyyyy?

It did have some cool moments, though.

Billions of people? Most of the things attacking them were drones left behind on the planet.
