No.

Houses shouldn't be an investment for most people anyway. You need somewhere to live. If you're on your own, the only options are to buy a home or rent one.

With $34k, he could've eaten $19 avocado toast every day for 5 years.

Im not going to criticize him for having help and investing the money he was given the right way, but get off your high horse. not everyone is being given thousands of dollars they can then take a risk with. Most Millennials can be given 34k right now. They'd have to use it to pay off student debt, still have student debt, and still not be able to afford to buy a house.

That's what makes people like this all the more frustrating...they have this "I DID IT, Anyone can do it! stop being dumb just be smart like me!"....Not every Millennial has people in their lives who can just hand them money to invest....and chances are if he failed at that first investment he'd have been given more for another chance. I credit him for being able to succeed and get back on that investment he made (with someone else's money) but using that scenario, comparing it to the more common scenario, and then saying "see, you aren't where i am because you go to starbucks sometimes" is annoying as hell...

Right. Like yeah great he obviously made some good decisions once he did get the money but how many of us would even get that chance in the first place?

Also he relied one someone else's money twice - the first time it was his boss buying that house/condo/whatever he flipped and the second time was his grandfather giving him that $34k so he could get the $150k loan.

Millenials would be wealthy if they weren't blowing all of their money on avacado sandwiches. They'd also have healthcare if they weren't buying iPhone. Don't even get me started on their flippant use of refrigerators.

But it isn't that stable.

Even if you get a reasonable monthly payment, all amenities are yours to pay (rentals often cover some), you have to cover repairs, you have a property tax, and you lose mobility. Oh did you get a new job offer in another State? Time to find a buyer for this piece of shit house. Did your family get bigger and you need more space? Have fun with that.

Rentals are simple, no surprise repairs to worry about, and way more flexibility. It's just a better way to live for most people.

What is even the point of owning a new home these days? And I mean one of these cookie cutter army camp looking pos things in manufactured "neighborhoods". I inherited my childhood home so I'm a different story. But growing up in the 80s-90s every single friend and family member had a home. Every home had a yard, front and back. A normal home. Everyone was different, some had a pool and yard, some just a huge yard, some had fruit trees, etc. A yard, a real yard was always a part of a home. And becoming an adult owning a home, the desire to have a home was that you had the yard. You could do what you wanted with it. Add things, remove things whatever you wanted. Raise kids with a treehouse and dogs like me and my brothers had, like my parents had, like their parents had.

Today in SoCal, all these tract homes are horrid. They sell for 300-500k, they're all poorly made and they have no yards. They cram 4 of these homes on the same amount of property mine is on. They're glorified apartments. There's no yard. You could literally stand at the back door and spit and hit the back perimeter fence. What the hell do people buy these things for. Not to mention the nazi-esq HOA they're all apart of so you have absolutely zero ability to make your house yours. It's madness.
