I am a Londoner. Currently living and working in France, but that's irrelevant here.
London has been my home for the best part of a decade.
Recent weeks have seen appalling scenes in my backyard. Generally at places I have been to or heavily frequent a lot.
Following the news in France, I saw the events unfold at this high rise and felt unbelievably angry.
I am so disgusted with the level of regulation; or lack of, re: standards of buildings, particularly tall ones.
And certainly in the more deprived parts of London this is sadly common.
Cutting corners, spending a mere few less £ per square metre, opting for a combustible combination rather than fire retardant - pisses me off. This could and should have been avoidable.

Now we have AT LEAST 58 people presumed dead.

All those who contributed to this gross act of incompetence that led to such loss of lives, must be held fully accountable. And heavily punished.
Bastards.

Just like terrorism here is not, and will never be, the new normal; deaths caused by greed and unscrupulous property developers and councillors must not happen.

I couldn't agree more. When I was in London I was absolutely appalled at the quality of the buildings and how unsafe they seemed. I wasn't staying in a rich neighbourhood like Kensington or anything, but the building I stayed in that my girlfriend at the time was living in was literally falling apart. I remember every time we took a shower she had to go to the lower floor and put a bucket near the entrance area because water would leak from the top floor through the ceiling and into the bottom floor.

I've lived in Switzerland all my life so I'm aware my standards might be high but still, London was one of the worst places I've been to in this regard.

It had been known years and the insulation to look better to the rich neighbors is why it was even worse... Terrible tragedy caused by greed.

I completely 100% agree with you

the divide between rich and poor is fucking disgusting but sadly there's nothing you can do about it when the government is being run by rich and greedy people who don't give a fuck about people who are deprived

Is it really commonplace for these conditions? I've never been to England but I've always had this perception of there, and especially London, as having pretty sound infrastructure and buildings.

Frustratingly; near my flat in London, I have seen the results of urban regeneration and know what's possible.
My local area has transformed into one that consists of quality buildings, reenergised parks and recreational areas.
When I have traveled outside to some London post codes, it is depressing to see buildings like this one and think how unsafe they probably are.
Even more depressing when considering the vast tracts of real estate such as South Kensington, Marylebone etc, that lay unoccupied yet perfectly maintained.
Assets, not homes, for the rich.

I honestly don't know how this will work in London but in the USA nobody would go to jail. The company would settle the lawsuit and that would be it.

last year, there was a law voted on which, if passed, would have forced landlords to ensure that their property was fit for human habitation

72 Tory MPs voted against this law

they were all landlords

Seems like the only countries they don't get away with it in are the ones where a failed politician ends up taken down by an angry mob or some government wide coup that then leads to another leader who will meet the same fate as his predecessor
