I don't have a clue. . .

How is Hogan being recorded illegal freedom of the press? Looking at the comments they're saying it's not just about the Hogan case, but an attack on the press. They outed someone as being gay, and he's the one that was backing Hogan's court fees. Seems like it might be a big rabbit hole here. Guess we'll have to see

They're saying that it's an attack on all media since billionaires are trying to shut down freedom of press. Hogan's sex tape should be open to them because of freedom of the press. It's a bunch of bull shit

So if I posted a sex tape against the will of a participant, I'm a criminal who deserves to be punished. But if a journalist posts a sex tape against the will of the participant, it's free speech.

And this documentary is taking Gawker's side?

Just watched the trailer and holy hell the things they're trying to demonstrate there are so friggin' outrageous. Showing all this footage that it was a "personal war" and that billionaires are trying to control free speech and all that garbage. It's obvious the person or people who made this are just friends with the idiots at Gawker, and not-so-subtly attacking Trump simultaneously (who knows, maybe that's their goal).

Yes you were. Gawker go ahold of the sex tape and Hogan, no authorizing it, sent a bunch of cease and desist letters that they ignored.

It went to court and they lost after a long smear campaign on their website against him.

They basically used their media platform to wage a personal vendetta against a celeb they didnt like. It was a violation of basic journalistic ethics and frankly disgusting.

Trump and "a bunch of other billionaires" are not involved. It's just one billionaire, Peter Thiel, who Gawker did out as gay and who did fund Hogan's case, but not secretly.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattdrange/2016/06/21/peter-thiels-war-on-gawker-a-timeline/
But Gawker could have avoided this whole mess by simply *gasp* not violating Hogan's privacy. They brought this on their own heads and I'm amazed the documentary is even slightly on their side.

I will be honest though, it is rather disturbing that a single billionaire was able to bring down an independent media group single handily, all due to a personal grudge.

I have zero sympathy for Gawker, and their actions absolutely should not be excused. Their first amendment rights were not violated; notice how the government did not imprison any Gawker executives. I think the fines they did have to pay were outrageous, but they had no moral ground to stand on, and I'm pretty sure they knew that.

He just paid for the lawyers. He didn't bribe the judges and he didn't force Gawker to commit the crime. Gawker would have been fine way back in 2012 if they had refused to post the video in response to the cease and desist letters they received from Hogan's lawyers. They also had 4 years to settle the case but didn't do so. They deserved everything they got.

No it isn't.

It's not like Thiel could have shut down Gawker on a whim. Gawker got smacked down because they thought they could get away with illegally exploiting a celebrity without many resources, but didn't count on their own shadiness catching up with them. Gawker absolutely got what they deserved.

Yep.

There's also a guy suing Techdirt:
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/01/man-who-says-he-invented-e-mail-sues-techdirt-for-disputing-claim/

And he's being represented by the same lawyer who represented Hogan, which I would hazard a guess means he has the right connections.

This is about how I feel too. There isn't a good guy in this situation.

On one hand, fuck gawker. They created their own enemies by outing gay people and uploading sex tapes.

On the other hand I'm not a fan of someone having the power and money to take down a media company, even if it's someone as shitty as gawker. You shouldn't be able to essentially sue a company out of existence.

In the end this is a Netflix documentary, and those things are horridly biased. Look at making a murderer and all the evidence that documentary chose to ignore. I'm sure this will be the same.

I think another problem here too is that Trump's constant attacks on the press are indeed a problem. He questions their legitimacy and wants to limit want can be said by then. That is how communism starts. I think the Trump/media rivalry needs more attention or awareness from the average person but I don't think that way to achieve it is through a Gawker vs Hulk Hogan documentary.

No one has enough money to sue a company out of existence, unless that company did something bad enough to warrant such punitive damages.

If Gawker didn't brazenly break the law like it did then they would still be around.
