https://www.axios.com/trump-pitched-republican-leaders-on-a-solar-paneled-border-wall-2435037888.html
In the meeting at the White House today with Republican Congressional leaders, President Trump spent some time talking up his latest idea for the border wall. According to 3 people with direct knowledge of the meeting, Trump floated the idea that the wall could be covered in solar panels and the electricity generated used to pay for the cost.

Trump said his vision was a wall 40 feet to 50 feet high and covered with solar panels so they'd be "beautiful structures," the people said. The President said that most walls you hear about are 14 feet or 15 feet tall but this would be nothing like those walls. [Note: what.] Trump told the lawmakers they could talk about the solar-paneled wall as long as they said it was his idea. One person cautioned that the President wasn't presenting the solar-paneled wall as the definite solution.

I doubt a solar wall will generate much power since the most effective way to use solar panels is to angle them.

wait I don't understand, what are you guys bitching about? He wants to make the wall be solar panel friendly and you guys just laugh at him? How is this a bad thing exactly?

Where this idea might come from: A proposal to cover the wall with solar panels was among those submitted when the U.S. requested designs earlier this year, according to the AP. Companies winning contracts and asked to build prototypes may be announced this month.

Putting solar panels on a wall isn't exactly efficient. It might sound like a good idea, but it might not actually do as much in reality.

Solar roadways have gone no where because flat surface solar panels generate less power than angled ones. Putting the panels vertically instead of horizontal probably won't change that. It might draw more power than a horizontal solar panel but it's only going to make the wall more expensive for worse power generation than just setting up a solar farm or outfitting buildings with solar roofs.

This isn't about Trump making an attempt at going green. This is about how inefficient it would be to line a wall with solar panels than just building them like we already do.

We tilt panels so they have more time in direct sunlight and draw more energy over the day. If you place panels flat you make the widow of direct sunlight much smaller.

You know Google images don't actually show how effective each set up. not to mention give how huge the wall will be you'll be adding a significant expense putting solar panels on it that even if you got perfect power draw it'll take a long time for that money to be earned back. This is a stupid idea as it's just a waste of money.

If Trump wants to build more solar farms I'll be all for it, but this idea is just added waste.

You could basically just have the solar sitting on the top of the wall mounted at an angle (or even on trackers that will adjust the angle with the sun).

I think large sections of the border are in areas that are going to be really far from the grid. You'd need to construct a lot of new transmission to connect the solar in those areas to the grid it is likely. So I doubt this will end up happening. It would make so much more economic sense to take the money that would be spent making this a "solar wall" and then just take that and build a normal utility-scale solar project in a location that actually makes sense. Also putting the panels in more of a square-shaped rectangle is a much better formation than one that would essentially be one panel wide but a few thousand miles long.

No, I'd rather he didn't build it whatsoever, that much is obvious. I'm happy to pick out why each of these individual aspects is silly, though.

What's amazing is that even a very basic estimate on this project should tell you that it's going to be one of the most protracted and difficult logistical construction projects in the history of the USA - not to mention one of the most expensive even just using concrete and a bit of steel - and you're saying that it will be worthwhile if we add solar panels on top. Any idea how expensive a solar panel is? How long that will take to do?

What's curious here is that you haven't really considered the cost of any of this. You just got excited because now it sounds like a "green" project - take that liberals!

pinky0926 posted...

There's no shifting here. It's very simple. My opinion is this entire wall thing is the most stupid thing ever, but the idea of making the height 40ft is even more stupid. And adding solar panels at an additional cost on top of all that? It's just hard to equate the amount of stupid that's gone into this entire thing, I'm losing track of it all.

Also, still using "cuck" without any hint of irony? Goodness me.

He claimed he was a great businessman (which is debatable at best) and he would get rid of the nation's debt. That's not going to happen if he sinks billions of dollars into a massive wall that will literally accomplish the exact opposite of its desired goal. This will not reduce the number of illegals in the country, it will increase them. Just like every previous time we have made immigration stricter and more difficult in the past.

That's exactly the point. The more difficult it is to get into a country, the less likely someone is to leave once they've gotten in the first time. If they go home when their VISA expires they may never be able to get back. So they just don't leave.

The problem is not putting up solar panels. If you want to put up solar panels and increase solar energy production that's fucking fantastic.

The problem is that he's considering doing so in just about the least efficient and least cost-effective way imaginable. You can spend a metric fuck-ton of money putting solar panels on a useless wall, or you could spend 1/10th of that and put them in a proper solar farm that would produce 10 times more energy. You gotta be a real idiot not to see the stupidity of this plan here.

Why stop at solar panels? Perhaps every 50 metres of wall there should be a windfarm and a hydroelectric plant.

The point you're missing is that I'm not going to roll over and say "Ah ok, it's fine then" just because you've added solar panels to the project. What I'm bitching about is the immense cost and time this project will take, and solar panels will increase that exponentially.

I know you want to pretend to care about going green, but this discussion is actually about whether this project is even remotely feasible or not.

We all know you can't have a little stick extending from a wall to put an angled surface on.

It won't generate much power anyway, even if the things are motorized to always fsce the sun directly. Solar is, at present and into the near future, much more a marketing thing than a practicality thing. I do have hopes for the future but right now we're in the buzzword phase.

There is a good bit of solar power being generated, make no mistake. But it takes a whole lot of panels to amount to anything substantial, compared to an oil or gas plant, which can match a dozen or more solar facilities.

Maybe I'm being a bit pessimistic. This is definitely going to be a huge wall, after all.

You can do long distance transmission over hundreds of miles actually. There's a greater loss the longer the distance is (due to something called i^2 R losses or Joule's First Law), but I don't think the distance would be large enough for that to be a huge issue. For example, dams in the Pacific Northwest are often tapped into by the California grid. It's just not going to be worth it from a cost-effectiveness standpoint to try to build along the border, ESPECIALLY since it's basically like a formation of solar panels that would be the equivalent of a rectangular that is thousands of miles long and like 10 feet wide... it would be way more economically efficient to have a more square-like formation of the same area.
