It's about time the UK government at least pretended to be serious about the threat of radical Islam. While her stupid attempt to "control" the Internet should be shunned.

Also many terrorists are educated and well off, that argument hasn't worked in a long while - it's about the only current ideology on the planet that manages to spread the same shit to just about every country it touches (from UK, to Philippines to Australia to the US).

Firstly, it's not an either/or thing. People dying by their hand increases the fear of terrorism, and that fear leads to the rest of society being more receptive to the removal of their rights because it makes them *feel* safer, even if they actually aren't. As callous as it may sound, terror attacks only affect the small number of people caught up in them; the removal of rights affects everyone.

Secondly, human rights go way beyond immigration, including the right to vote, to privacy and to a fair trial; protection from discrimination on various grounds; freedom of thought, speech, religion, press and movement (no, not *that* freedom of movement); and so on.

You may say that few of those rights would "get in the way" of "tackling extremism and terrorism" (although I could make a case for pretty much all of them doing just that), but you'll notice how vague she was on details. God only knows what rights she'll attack and her justifications for doing so. Theresa May alone shouldn't be judge, jury and executioner. All of this is a distraction from the real issues (and I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly what May wants), like policing, intelligence, foreign policy, integration, and yes, even immigration. I'm against completely closing the borders or throwing people out of the country of course, but looking at how we protect the borders and screen people entering the country? Sure. There are sensible ways of going about these things.

People have a short memory and are doomed to repeat the mistakes of our past. We should heed the wisdom of those that experienced them first-hand and fought for our freedom in the great wars of the past, the few that remain at least.

Also, has anyone else noted the irony of people complaining about those in power abusing their position and then turning round and talking about removing some of our only protections against those things (e.g. human rights)?

What is a logical solution? Something does need to be done, but what May proposes I fail to see how can possibly be a solution, as it simply gives too much control of information to the government. If you believe it is, I am curious as to why.

I guess the second part technically wasn't a strawman, although no-one said anything about terrorists *not* winning when they kill people. It's just that their end goal goes beyond that, i.e. making us live in fear and then change our way of living to try and allay that fear.
