I used OpenXCom, of course.
I... did not do well. Use smoke grenades they said. It'll be fun they said. I died, a lot. ... Copied to Clipboard!

This is worse than the new XCom.

I actually felt like the new ones were an improvement, too, but you better take this;

That game doesn't hold your hand. I just look at all the things happening on the globe and nod until combat somehow happens, and it's downhill from there.

Did OpenXCom fix the difficulty glitch?
It's actually a great game but it requires more methodical and deliberate gameplay and it's far less forgiving than the new titles. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Apparently OpenXCom is harder than the original, even after the bugfix.

imo xenonauts does a far better job with this
your ultra-shit starting accuracy can be dealt with by bringing soldiers equipped with heavy weapons, who make up for their 10% hit chance by firing 10 times hitting even 2-3x is enough for a kill against the early enemies --- And when the hourglass has run out, eternity asks you about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not. ... hahahaha wow
yeah this is why i strongly prefer xenonauts the enemy still does mob your drop zone but you have a chance, they don't get to react when they first spot you but rather when you move in their sights that changes *everything* --- And when the hourglass has run out, eternity asks you about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not. ... Baneposting posted...This is worse than the new XCom. Terror From The Deep seems so fucking brutal. Couple of the Yogscast guys streamed it a while back. They did the original game in just three sessions on the hardest difficulty with ironman. They only got one game over when they had a base invasion seconds after starting the game. After that, they breezed through it. Terror From The Deep on its hardest ironman difficulty took them fifteen three hour streams and 2-4 game overs before they managed to complete it. A legitimate tactic was, when you started a mission, just open the door and pass until it's the aliens turn because that's the only way to make sure they don't just immediately kill your entire crew before they get off the ship. --- ... They only got one game over when they had a base invasion seconds after starting the game. After that, they breezed through it. the thing about xcom1 is that all difficulties are actually the 'easy' difficulty IIRC terror from the deep fixed that bug but the problem with BOTH games is that the enemy reaction fire system works 'when they see you' even if you havent moved whereas in xenonauts, not only is that not the case but your men auto-stop movement on spotting an enemy, so you have to CHOOSE to let them take reaction fire at you xcom kind of encourages you to do annoying and tedious things like move 1 square at a time and shoot out stairs --- And when the hourglass has run out, eternity asks you about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not. ... So what I read regarding difficulty of later games is that, specifically because of community complaining after the original XCOM, they made all the difficulties significantly harder. All thanks to an awesome glitch :|
