"Europe "must take its fate into its own hands" faced with a western alliance divided by Brexit and Donald Trump's presidency, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday.

"We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands," she added."

(MODS - Not the whole article. Not even close)

That's right. The primary purpose to put cheeto in power was to break the alliance between us and europe. Mission accomplished.

As we withdraw from leadership in the global stage (TPP, Paris Agreement, NATO, UN) somebody else will fill the void, and Russia will be unchecked.

I wonder if the "speak murrican!!! this is murrica!" MAGA folks will mind learning Russian, tovarisch?

European nations are fucked with its current arrangement and fucked without it.

Unless the EU is torn down and replaced with something that doesn't seek to blow its own brains out for the benefit of German manufacturing and the virtue signalling of a political class then it's going to be screwed regardless.

The US has only ever done things based on what it can get out of it. Pretending that supporting European nations is some act of solidarity is bullshit.

If the EU had any sense it would look to improve relations with nations that keep the US up at night. If the US is withdrawing from a power structure then it gives an opportunity to do that. Until of course relations improve, the US sulks and we're back to square one.

The EU is the one thing keeping russia from taking over some of its former satellite states so it can "revive its empire".

You mean NATO.

NATO, trade sanctions and US military bases surrounding Russia have for good or ill contained a post-USSR Russia. International trade, China's ascendancy and periods of global recession have kept Russia in a position where it cannot yet become as viable a "threat" as it once was.

The EU has done little but become one of the most achingly unsustainable welfare states in history and at the same time made itself look appealing for takeover - but a nightmare to then run. It's a poisoned chalice. If the EU forms its own military it will create its own problems, least of all; who'll actually pay for it and fight for it, let alone what they're supposed to be fighting for.

Better relations with Russia would help. That would be much too sensible though. Russia and the US have enough coherency as nations to play empire, perhaps they've learnt that empires need to be ran and enforced which takes blood and money. The US is likely to look to scale back its global involvement, which could be a good thing. Blaming Russia for desiring to expand or assert themselves while surrounding them with forces is hypocrisy. Russia isn't strong enough economically though to safely go expansionist. They could gamble and use conflict as the catalyst for revival as Nazi Germany did, unless you win though then you'll end up even worse off. In a nuclear world though, nobody wins.

The EU is about as much use as herding cats, wants to play empire but can't even form a cohesive identity for people to rally to.

The inbred suspicion the US has of Russia and likewise is more than likely to prevent them from pulling either of their heads out of their arses. Expecting the EU to fill that void would be foolishness.

Why would he lose 2020? If anything he will have an easier victory this time. The Montana election truly opened my eyes. The GOP guy was a plutocrat out of touch with the people, a man who voted to take away their health care (in a state that relies heavily on it!) and he literally assaulted a reporter right before the election. The Dem candidate was a man of the people (a country singer!) . Yet the GOP won anyway. NOTHING can make them lose.

Voter suppression, blatant gerrymandering, kicking out as many hispanics as they can and incarcerating as many blacks as they can in time for 2020 will make for an insanely easy election. We're stuck for 8 years of this dude.

If other countries start forming trade blocks and excluding us from such trade blocks, they start forming military alliances and taking certain actions towards undermining us (e.g. let's not use the dollar anymore), we won't stay the # 1 superpower for 10 years

well there's the fact that most votes were already mailed in and could not be taken back

there's the fact that it was montana, not ohio or PA

there's the fact that trump's approval ratings are consistently low, low enough that the upset of a sitting president not getting 4 more years is within the realm of possibility

there's the possibility of the facts forcing the GOP to impeach him, and the associated voter fury if they don't

and there's my assumption that some patriot will murder him before he finishes this term

People were saying this about McCain in 2008. He's almost 81 now and still a senator.

For Trump to hold as many rallies as he did, there's no indication he is in poor physical or mental health for his age. I'm not saying he will definitely run again, and I wouldn't blame him if he chose not to, but the man has been working his entire life. He could have easily retired 20 years ago. Even 30 years ago.
