A seven-year-old boy miraculously survived after jumping out of a 10-story window on Monday while holding an umbrella, trying to imitate a cartoon that he had been watching.

After watching a cartoon character use an umbrella as a parachute to safely jump down to the ground from a great height, the boy in Suzhou reportedly decided that he wanted to give that a try as well.

However, it was not the umbrella that ended up saving his life, but a power line which slowed his fall on the way down.
The boy sustained serious injuries from the fall, but following surgery doctors said that his life was longer in danger.

i sprained my ankle once on the playground but it wasn't from jumping off it :(.
had a weak ankle for years as a result until it somehow fixed itself (injured it again) and never had that issue.

But the cartoon showed him the consequences of jumping down from a height with nothing but an umbrella; that the cartoon character, whoever it was, landed safely on the ground. To his seven year old mind, why would he distrust what a cartoon tells him is perfectly safe? "Because it's not real" is something we learn at an older age than him.

When I watched Tom & Jerry with my nephew when he was young, I pointed out all the instances that something happening on screen would kill a real cat.

Yeah, but at least we were all self-aware enough to know that you test fly it by jumping off a bed or a couch, not from an apartment 10 stories up.

I never tried it because we never had an umbrella.

Though I did jump off the dresser--probably five feet--pretending I was Mario fighting the giant boo unthat ghost house in SMW.

I dunno what I was thinking. Boos deal collision damage even if you jump on them. I should have found some blocks to throw at him instead.

I didn't jump either. I made parachutes for dolls using plastic bags and bungee ropes using rubber bands but never jumped
