Mafia, sometimes called "werewolves" is a game where the participants are divided into 2 groups.

You have the members of "town" who know their role (cop, doctor, nothing, etc), but nothing else about anyone else.

And you have the members of "mafia" who not only know their role, but they have a secret board where they can talk to the other members of the mafia and they can come up with strategies.

The size of the mafia is typically around 1/4 the size of the town, with some flexibility based on how balanced the set up is.


The goal of the town is to lynch and otherwise kill all the threats to town. This means all the members of the mafia, but can sometimes also include independent factions such as a serial killer or a cult leader or something weird like that.


The goal of the mafia is to kill off the members of town each night without being caught until they represent 50% of the town and possess a voting majority, or at least enough to force a tie.


The game has two phases. The "Day" phase which typically lasts 48 hours or until a lynch occurs. During the Day phase everyone in the game will converse with each other in the main mafia topic. You use this time to feel out the people you are playing with and to try and decide if you think they are goor or evil. Once the day ends whoever has the most votes gets lynched and killed. Once they are killed the host announces what their role/faction was and the night phase begins.

During the "night" (12-24 hours) phase you are not allowed to speak in the main topic. The mafia can still speak to each other on their private board, and the members of town can still speak to the host privately. Some roles have night actions, such as the cop's ability to scan 1 person each night and find out if they are Mafia or Town. Doctor's attempt to save lives, and mafia members attempt to take lives. Once the time is up and night ends (or sometimes earlier if everyone with a night action submits it quickly) then the night ends and the host announces who (if anyone) died at night and what their role/faction was.



There is a lot more to it than just that, but that's enough to get you started. It's a game of reading your allies and opponents and deciding who you can trust. It can be easy to get started, but difficult to be good at. Some of the best players rely very little on the relatively hard information from things like night actions and instead follow their gut and the reads they get from other people's posts and demeanor.

It's great fun, but it can be a pretty consuming or overwhelming experience when you have multiple topics filling up every day with either hundreds or thousands of posts. It can be a bit of a commitment to put even just enough time into the game to stay current on everything that is being said.

Might not be the most prime example, but it's basically a deduction game using logic and critical thinking with some psychology as well.
