saber is boring as f*** just like in f/sn but rider (alexander the great?), caster, and archer (of course) are awesome. also can't wait to see kotomine's master plan.

Kirei's in the closet about his sociopathy and is in denial over it. His own dad thinks he's a saint!

also, emiya's a boss and saber taking ilya's mom around was a terrible subplot

man the lancer/saber fight is painful to watch. it is nice to see saber getting pissed on though. also, the music that plays when rider shows up is great.

this would be insanely frustrating to follow if i were watching week-to-week. emiya seemed poised to do something awesome and then poof, it was gone.

also watching berserker kick ass here is making me angry about how berserker got nerfed more and more in F/SN. he was this unbeatable monster in fate, then became a non-factor in UBW, then a joke in HF. argh.

i really like the matou kid. i don't think it's been explicitly stated, but is sakura his illegitimate daughter? would make the most sense imo. and it would increase the stakes a bit and increase my respect for a dude whose primary motivation seems to be the coveting of another man's wife.

so far... i think F/SN has the incredibly unique ability to layer its stories in a way F/Z can't as an anime. and the structure with a clear narrator gave the story focus and allowed for a more exploratory experience. in terms of actual tactics and masters/servants, i think F/Z has a clear edge.

Gil and the Sakura-shadow thing/Alter Saber are just that damn strong; Berserker was never nerfed.

The original F/Z's novel's strength lies in how it portrays Kiritsugu and Kotomine psychologically. Since most of this characterization is done through their internal thoughts, they come across as flat and dull in the anime.

'i know i got my ass kicked by saber for three days when she wasn't even trying, but i can still slay berserker nine times with a single move!'

also i really don't think this show works without having read f/sn, but since i have, it's been quite enjoyable

Enkidu (Gil's chain) is much stronger against opponents with divinity; since Hercules is Zeus' son, it ruins him.

i remember the divinity excuse yeah, but if caster had her divinity greatly diminished by being shinji's servant, then berserker's divinity should also have been brought down quite a few pegs

i can't decide which is worse - the fact that 9 lives was more effective than excalibur, or that it was more effective than archer himself (who had a whole servant body, not just an arm)

also, i am enjoying caster. and i am disliking saber more than i did in F/SN probably because the relationship she has with ilya's mom isn't nearly as compelling as the one she had with shirou (told from shirou's perspective). blah.

judging from ilya's comments on the fight, he only used projection; she would've def said something if archer used a reality marble

saber suffers a lot in zero, so maybe you'll enjoy that

and the show works fine if you don't know fate/stay night. in some ways better at least since you don't know how it ends. saber being lame is pretty saber-like.

by now though you should love the hell out of Caster. or more to the point, his VA. so, so good.

also for some reason i think running into kotomine this time (in the woods behind the castle) kinda lessened his potential impact. i dunno. i think the fact that kotomine was at his most badass in heavens feel (far, far more so than in fate or UBW) added to his appeal as final boss in F/SN. and he's certainly being played as big bad here.

caster is pretty cool but so far he's been irrelevant which is disappointing. i mean 'i guess' he drew everyone to him.

i liked saber in F/SN. her character is very straightforward, but the way she interacted and grew with shirou was great and i really felt that their connection was genuine.

i think that part of the reason i wouldn't like it, without having seen F/SN, is that the foreknowledge gives anticipation. the stakes in F/SN were much more character-driven than F/Z, where it's just a bunch of dudes who suddenly appear and start fighting while walking away from explosions like badasses. also, it should under normal stances be f***ing illegal to begin an anime with 48 minutes of that bulls*** exposition. >_>

Waver at least you got from the beginning - he wants to prove himself. the three houses are the three houses (much of the same way they are in F/SN though Rin evolves). the Matou guy as you put it has a personal reason for fighting. Caster being the odd man out isn't that strange considering Caster was... also the odd man out in F/SN.

the relationships will become much clearer as the show continues. do think you'll like quite a few characters though.

oh i know what you mean. but overall the show's tone is demonstrative and not subjective like F/SN's, where against our will, we're forced behind shirou's misogynistic, brain-damaged, hero-complex eyes. because shirou didn't know anything, the process of learning and experiencing the HGW5 was organic and worked well. here, each character ostensibly has some motivations and some of them are even likably evil, but the stakes don't feel the same. it's just easier to relate to high school students (like waver) rather than these super-cold assassins, dead-on-the-inside church mongrels, weirdass serial killers, etc. these guys make for good combat and drama but not the best character-driven storytelling experience IMO

that said i am enjoying it quite a bit
