Anyway, I'm planning on getting both, but 3DS has a higher priority. My DS' R button is broke, and the battery's shot, while I only really want the one game for the Vita.

Heh, well I do currently have 'everything' myself, and I could afford to grab both. But I'm currently in the process of building a large savings stockpile.
I think every console with precious few exceptions adds something unique to the proceedings, but I'm not sure I'd call anyone uninterested in catching them all poor... A lot of folks around here have zero draw toward a 360 or a gaming PC and I get that. /shrug!
3ds early as its library is killing and will continue to do so. Vita later because while it won't be as good, it will be good enough. Also gives it time for honebrew to run rampant, microsd adapters, and ways to play my psp games. Though that's more in line with the homebrew,

The Vita won't stay at this price forever so it'll eventually drop at some time. All I'm missing is a Vita from this gen and I'll have all the hand helds and consoles.
Depends on what games you're interested in. The 3DS doesn't have much right now outside of the typical Nintendo titles, and the Vita is going through the usual launch window drought. There are some good games for both coming out this year, though. NSMB2, Gravity Rush, MGS HD, Persona 4.
The 3DS drops between $125-150 occasionally, which is more in your price range. Both are solid systems, but the 3DS has a great line-up already and is cheaper, so you should probably jump on that when it hits a good price and pick up the Vita at a later date.

Honestly tom, it's basically ds vs psp again. If you want one, 3ds is cheaper, has more and better stuff, and lets you play the older systems games too. Vita is more expensive, a dumb media format to save, and all its problems will be fixed over the years via homebrew, along with the price due to time. 3ds is a get in the first two years, vita is get in 5. Solves the money problem right there.
And it's got a hell of a lot more than just 'the Nintendo stuff'.

I own a 3DS, and it certainly doesn't have much outside of the Nintendo stuff that warrants $30-$40.
Edit - To clarify, I mean what's available in the US. And the Nintendo games are good, it's just not at a point right now where it's comparable to the DS in its later life, where there was a ton of great stuff to choose from.
Ace Combat, devil survivor, tota, shadow wars, and sonic generations are the main ones I was thinking. It's the inferior generations, but that's because the pc-console release is amazing. Still a damn good game and different gameplay too. Ace Combat never really mentioned but it's better than X for psp or 4 for ps2. Really good game there.

Get a psp. Used ones are like 50 bucks to 70. Umds won't work on the vita, but digital downloads will. And as time passes that will sort itself out, via homebrew if needed. If you can't even afford a psp right now, this question is way too premature to ask. And you already have memory stick adapters for microsd cards.
