Thanks bruv.

Get anything cool at the night market? This is the first summer I've been here for it in at least 7 years. I remember being too young to really care about any of the deals they had back then, but I remember seeing a lot of knock-off designer stuff as well bootlegs of just about everything.

nah. there's less vendors every year. i remember five years ago, every other table was selling R4 chips, DS/PSP accessories, bootleg DVDs and other cool things. now it's all hello kitty iphone cases, sunglasses, and $5 PENTYHOSE (best typo). I did manage to pick up some Mario slippers for my nephew, though.

it's all about the food, anyway. so much good stuff: okonomiyaki, deep fried squid, bacon & asparagus, and red thai curry soup in a bun. my girlfriend and i were bloated by the end.

Live - Throwing Copper (album)

I think I was around 23 last time I counted, so this will be the last one. I know this would make it at least 25 and possibly up to 27 depending on whether or not I accept those who decided not to read.

Kevin McPhee - Blue Organ/Get In With You (Icon)

Man... I'm looking at the genre list in my player and it seems like this guy produces all of my least favourite genres of electronic music. I started off with the Blue Organ EP and while i can't say I really enjoyed it, the first track didn't bother me. I really liked the sound of the samples used, even though the rest fell pretty flat. I was a much bigger fan of the second track "Hang My Head" which featured some kick-ass work on the drums... but my praise honestly ends there. This is honestly my least favourite kind of music. Not because I think it's "bad" or in any way unimpressive, because it's somewhat interesting to listen to.... and i couldn't really ever imagine producing a track in this style... but it lacks everything I enjoy in music. The only thing that I need in music is the ability to make me feel something. I don't need a guitar, a piano, or a synth.. it can be any genre, vocals or instrumental.. anything, but it has to bring up some kind of emotion. And that doesn't necessarily mean happy, sad, or excited. If it can make me start bobbing my head, or make me want to dance... or feel nostalgic.. anything really, then I will enjoy it. This style of music generally does nothing for me.

It's hard for me to actively hate music because of this, since music I consider "bad" (as in not to my taste) just leaves me bored, rather than annoyed. I really have nothing to say about the rest of Blue Organ or Get In With You, because they didn't inspire any thoughts or feelings. I kind of enjoyed the funky bass in the LV remix of "Get In With You" but I'd have to assume that LV is a different producer entirely.

So that's pretty much it. Not a fan at all... but I'm not sure you didn't expect any different from a dude who doesn't enjoy Burial's Untrue.

Mostly Autumn (neon)

You know, I was quite unsure if 3 songs was a good number to use, since I basically chose it arbitrarily as I was unwilling to listen to 25 full albums... this group has convinced me that 3 may have been the perfect number.

I liked the first track well enough, although it quickly became clear that the aspects of their music that I enjoy, aren't the aspects of their music that they enjoy. My favourite part of "The Second Hand" is the little melody that opens the song which repeats a couple times throughout the duration(0:01-0:08 and 0:15-0:22), but it's just way too short... if it was the main backing rhythm for the track, I would love the hell out of it.

Now the second track surprised the hell out of me. I had no idea there was a female vocalist in the group, but listening to "The Second Hand" more closely, I think she's on the backup vocals during the chorus. I liked "Shrinking Violet" much more than the first track as I generally enjoy female vocals more than males (at least of my favourite bands are fronted by dudes, but I'm just talking generally here) and I like the melodies in this track more as well. What I don't like about this song? The chorus. More proof that me and this band just don't agree with each other musically. I mean the hook is supposed to be the part of the song you want to sing... but I ****ing hate it. It actually ruins the song for me. Or so I thought... until the song just ran for another 4 minutes (I don't look at track length before listening) without being the least bit interesting. Since I've only heard three songs from this group, I may not be qualified to make this judgement, but this song just seems overly ambitious. Maybe 8 minute songs are nothing out of the ordinary for them**, but this is just too much. I'm not sure I've switched my opinion on a track so harshly before. I went from "Whoa, maybe I misjudged them on the first track, these guys are really good" during the first verse to, "**** these people" at the 6 and a half minute mark.

I'm not even sure I can elaborate on why I hate "Winter Mountain". I'm don't feel confident identifying the instruments used used in the main rhythm, but I can assure you that I don't enjoy any of them. The lyrics also leave a lot to be desired, although I would be lying if I told you that great lyrics would change my opinion on the track.

"Winter Mountain" basically proved that myself and Mostly Autumn do not enjoy the same things in music. The aspects of their music that I dislike the most are the ones they choose to repeat mercilessly, and my favourite moments are cut short or ruined by the chorus and ridiculous length. Augh.

Two clunkers in a row... I wanted to get three done tonight, but now I'm unsure. It's a full album next too...

Joni Mitchell - Blue (VincentLauw)

First of all, I had no idea that Joni Mitchell came from goddamn Fort Macleod, Alberta. I grew up in Lethbridge which I consider to be a pretty **** town, but Fort Macleod was about a half hour away with 1/20 of the population. Gotta give her props for making something out of her self coming out of that place... literally the only famous person to ever be born there. Also, Big Yellow Taxi (or one of it's covers) is still played on the radio literally every day in every city in Canada (I'm not sure if it's documented, but it's a fact).

Anyways... I could instantly see why you suggested this album from the first couple seconds, based on how much I enjoyed that Van recommendation a few months back. I don't have a wide enough musical vocabulary to tell you what I find similar about both artists, but the first track definitely makes me feel quite similar to some of the songs on Astral Weeks, making me feel nostalgic for memories that I haven't actually experienced... A very odd, but enjoyable feeling.

As far as her voice goes, I'm pretty sure I like the sound of it, although I'm not too fond of her vocal style. I mean there is nothing wrong with a vocalist showing their range and speeding up or slowing down their singing... but there is a certain speed and pitch that I really enjoy from her, and the others... not so much. So I'm pretty much half annoyed with each verse she delivers ("The Last Time I Saw Richard"). Maybe not half annoyed, since it's clearly more positive than negative, but I greatly prefer the tracks where she sticks to a lower pitch and delivers the vocals in a more uniform manner, like "Little Green" for example. The one glaring exception to this rule is the track "California" which is easily my favourite song on the album, and I mean easily. The entire album is pretty great (except for the title track) but California is top-tier.

Hmm. I thought I had a lot more to say. I've actually listened to this album 3 times but even that isn't enough for me to say anything significant about the lyrics. I can confidently say that they aren't terrible... but it usually takes me somewhere in the range of 10 listens before I start paying serious attention to a song's lyrics. I'll know I don't enjoy them on the first listen, but to call them great takes a lot more time... so I can only say "not bad" on the lyrical front.

While this album won't earn a spot on my phone (I'm just way too happy these days to play something like this while outside) it's good stuff. Although this is her most critically acclaimed album, I feel that if I actually went through her discography that it would not stand out as my favourite of hers, especially if she recorded something that is more upbeat with songs similar in style to California.

Emilie Simon - Végétal (Ayuyu)

So I know you actually just chose three songs rather than the album, but you didn't link me to any of them and the one I chose to listen to first (My Old Friend) could not be found on Youtube, and I wasn't going to listen to a live version. So I was forced to find the album it was on, and it just turns out that every song you chose was from the same album. How convenient.

To be fair I listened to your three selections first, before noticing that many of the tracks seemed to flow into each other like a mixed recording. Being a DJ I had to respect this and give the entire album a chance from start to finish, which is kind of odd considering I wasn't too pleased with what I had heard so far.

Her voice is fine. It didn't blow me away on any of the tracks, but it was pleasant enough to listen to. What I don't enjoy at all is the production. While there is quite a bit going on in terms of the variety and frequency of the sounds being used, the overall production still feels quite empty. Not empty as in boring, but in the sense that there is still a lot of "space" that is left unused. I don't want to sound like one of those people that claims "It's all about the BASS" because it really isn;t... and I can generally enjoy even the most understated and minimalistic types of electronic music production, but I just can't vibe with the types of sounds that are used to back up her vocals in the tracks you chose. The overall vibe of a track like "Rose Hybride De Thé" is quite interesting to me, but I feel that it would be a much stronger track if about half the effects were removed and it was able to sink deeper into the creepy vibe it settles into after the halfway point. It just sits in this weird spot that is not quite creepy or upbeat enough for me to enjoy. I much more enjoy the song that follows it on the album "Never Fall in Love" which while featuring the same types of sounds that I generally hate in the production, has that poppy, upbeat vibe that I enjoy from her. And speaking of songs you didn't suggest...

"Fleur de Saison" is probably the song I enjoy most on this album. Even though clap rhythms annoy the hell out of me (and seem to be featured greatly on this album) I really enjoy the bass and guitar on this track. I actually really like about 75% of this album now that I think about it... it just turns out that your suggestions ended up being my least favourite! I think the problem is that I do enjoy her vocals, but I hate almost all of the electronic production. The more poppy tracks with traditional instruments and the slower ones with minimal production that allow her vocals to shine ("In The Lake") are the tracks I gravitate to, while the tracks with heavier production I would simply rather not listen to.

Overall a really good rec, even though I would have hated it had I been able to find all three tracks on Youtube. Since I'm going to assume you've heard most if not all of her stuff, could you suggest which one of her albums you think I would enjoy most? I'm definitely into the more poppy tracks such as Fleur de Saison and Never Fall In Love.

Might wanna check out Court and Spark and Hejira by her. Both real good too and might be more what you're looking for.

California is a great song I agree, All I Want might be my favorite though. And yeah she has a tendency to go higher up in her range but I like that part of her voice too personally!

The Big Machine definitely, the other CD '' The Flower Book '' almost has the exact same songs as Végétal.

Also what I like the most about this girl is that she does everything herself, kinda what got me to listen to her stuff in the first place.

Duly noted. I did also notice that she actually produces the tracks herself, I just didn't feel like commenting on it since her production wasn't really what I enjoyed on the album... even in the tracks I loved. Kind of interested in seeing March of the Penguins now though, it takes an incredible amount of skill to produce a movie soundtrack and I'm curious to see what she did with it.

Cloud Nothings (colliding)

Some pretty short songs, will probably get a pretty short writeup.

Believe it or not, I generally really like this kind of music. Well, I guess you'd have no reason not to believe it since you probably have no idea what I look like in real life... but this genre (whatever it is) is probably what gets me the most weird looks when I'm discussing my musical tastes. Now I don't dislike this group, it's more that I almost like them. I just really don't enjoy anything about the lead singer's voice. Of the songs you chose, I do enjoy the structure and the instrumentation, especially on "Stay Useless" where the opening guitar bit reminds me of the song "Hard To Explain" by The Strokes... but the vocals basically ruin it for me. If this is one of those groups where the dude's voice changes over time I could see myself really loving some of their albums, but from this selection I don't see myself ever listening to them again.
