What is your favorite completionist reward in a game?

Toughie. 100%-ing a game is it's own reward for me, and off the top of my head, can't remember any rewards for those from the games I've played. Radiant Historia's best ending was great, but it doesn't require 100% (but close).

I'm... going with Medievil 1. Aww yeah Dan's reward for obtaining all of the Chalices.

And on that note, Medievil 2 is.... kinda weird. I personally feel the non 100% ending is better, and in retrospect, might be the real challenge of the game (the weapon you get for getting all chalices is fantastic, and perfect against the final boss)

Which video game character has your favorite design?

... didn't you already ask this question?

Anyway, Pram the Oracle of Makai Kingdom, Lord Blazer of Wild Arms 2, Asagi Igawa of Taimanin Asagi, Sandro the Necromancer (or Warlock in the first one) of the Heroes of Might and Magic series.

100%-ing is its own reward.

Maybe that little plink sound of getting the platinum trophy.

But naw seriously secret endings and stuff are the best. Banjo-Kazooie's peek into the future was really cool at the time, and Metroid Prime's teaser endings too.

29. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
external image

I’ve noticed over the years that I’ve developed a “habit” of getting into a series at the right time. I got into Metal Gear Solid like a month before MGS3 came out, for example. In the case of the Uncharted series, I didn’t get into the series until about a year ago, and so I didn’t have to wait very long for Uncharted 3 to come out. There is certainly an epic feel to it with its set pieces, such as escaping the burning chalet and the cruise ship. The graphics are beautiful. They also explored Nathan Drake as a character much more than they had before, dealing with his motivations of why he does what he does and the truth about his background, although Naughty Dog deftly avoids giving direct answers to most of the questions raised in the game. For some people, the fact that those questions are left open is a good thing because they enjoy the “mystery” of it, but for others, it can be kind of disappointing that so many questions were asked but were never really answered. I think I lean a bit toward the latter, especially when it comes to dealing with his personal motivations because that was a big plot point, and there was no real closure there.

Anyway, the main appeal of Uncharted as a series is the set pieces, and it delivers on that for the most part in the third game (As an aside, I don’t want to hear anyone complain about a game like FFXIII being linear and then proclaim their love for Uncharted. These games are about as linear as it gets). The ship graveyard and the cruise ship are my favorite areas in the series. They’re just so good. I’ve seen a lot of people criticize their inclusion because it “makes no sense” for Nate to be there or something, but who cares when the gameplay is this great. Uncharted’s levels defy a simple explanation, at least for me, but I love the cruise ship so much. The design is really good, and the gunfight sections are challenging as well. Plus, there’s the fact that it’s raining the whole time, which as I said, makes everything better. Also, I love the scene afterward with Drake and Elena. That’s one of those instances where it’s better off with them saying less instead of outright explaining everything.

The combat in Uncharted 3 is much improved as well, especially hand to hand combat. I used melee attacks a ton in this game, although they do have a bit of a drawback. I can’t tell you how many times I got killed because I was stuck in the middle of an uncancelable melee sequence getting shot at from another enemy somewhere close by. Maybe that’s my fault for being too aggressive with hand to hand combat, but it would’ve been nice to be able to cancel out of them so you can get back behind cover before you get killed. That was probably my only really big complaint, gameplay-wise though. Everything else is pretty solid and a big step up from the second game.

However, if there’s one thing that holds Uncharted 3 back from being the best game in the series, it’s the pacing. Maybe it’s an unfair comparison because Uncharted 2 might be the most perfectly paced game I’ve ever played, but there were times the game seemed to drag a bit, particularly some of the stuff in the desert. Obviously, this isn’t a major gripe since the game still ranks pretty highly on the list, but I think it’s enough to hold it back from being the best game in the series, especially when Uncharted 2 does it so well (and yes, future list spoilers, you can expect to see UC2 at some point).

Valkyria Chronicles I guess.
Really liked the first one and I'm finding the second one to be just as awesome.

LitteBigPlanet comes second for now, and maybe inFamous if the second game is as good or better than the first.
Mass Effect is also awaiting it's sequel to be played before I make that judgment.

Even as someone who generally prefers his games to be linear (unless the game has "Metroid" in the name), Final Fantasy XIII's level design (and the entire game aside from the levelling-up system and maybe the battle system) seemed like it was on autopilot from the LP I watched. Compare this to a "linear" game like Super Mario Galaxy where you're constantly hopping from planet to planet, and the vast majority of planets have their own "personality" just as each room/area in the best Zelda and Metroid games do. I'm watching ScottishDuck17's LP of Galaxy as he's uploading it and it pretty much astonishes me about every other minute, if not more often (also that's his favorite Mario game, favorite Wii game, and 2nd favorite 3D platformer behind Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal).

Even compared to the other RPGs I've watched LPs of recently - Mother 3, Skies of Arcadia, and Mass Effect (the former two being especially enticing) - Final Fantasy XIII's level design seemed extremely off-putting, and I'm having an even more difficult time accepting that Final Fantasy XIII is in the same series as Final Fantasy VI than I have accepting that Metroid: Other M is in the same series as Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.

But, like I said, they're just LPs. So I guess you shouldn't take my word for it. However, I have a good feeling that Mother 3 and Skies would become all-time favorites of mine if I played them - I enjoyed watching the LPs that much.

I don't. There are plenty of wide open action games, too. If you want to say it's a genre thing, fine, but it's weird to me to say that linearity bothers you in FFXIII while you love a game as on rails as Uncharted.

What is your favorite instance of getting to play as the bad guy in a game?

It's not something I really enjoy, to be honest. Rivetting answer, I know <_<. I normally wouldn't bother answering the question, but it's more than just "I don't have an answer", it's that I don't get any enjoyment out of it. I'm not entirely sure why. I guess I'm just too nice!

If I had to come up with an answer, I guess that, depending on how you play it HEAVY RAIN SPOILERS Well not really depending on how you play it, just said that to avoid it being a complete spoiler that Scott Shelby's the origami killer. Although you don't really know that he's the bad guy until the final scene you play as him in, but that's such a powerful scene that I'll still count it!

What is your favorite completionist reward in a game?

Not sure. An inner feeling of self-satisfaction? Trophies? I'm more of a challenge-mode gamer than a completionist one, I guess.

What is your favorite new series of this generation?

If we're going back to the DS and not limiting it to 3DS, can I cheat and say Ace Attorney since the DS is the first time it was released in English? If not, I guess Mass Effect. Uncharted is cool too, but I've only played the first one so I'm in no position to really comment on it properly.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles spoilers below

29. Sonic 3 & Knuckles – Hidden Palace Zone

For the record, it’s just the first two minutes of that video, although Sky Sanctuary’s pretty awesome, too! Anyway, I’m sure this is a strange moment to include on a list like this to a lot of you, especially for it to rank this high, but this is a surprisingly well done scene for a 2-D Sonic game without any dialogue, in my opinion. This is the climax of stuff that’s been building up over the course of two games, too. When I played Sonic 3, I hated Knuckles. He was always showing up to troll me and laugh at me, and you never got to give him his comeuppance. Sure, he had that moment at the end of Sonic 3 where he falls off of the pillar as the Death Egg launches, but I wanted to give it to him personally.

Then Sonic & Knuckles comes out, and it’s more of the same. Knuckles continues to troll you, but then the time to give him a taste of his own medicine finally arrives with the Hidden Palace Zone. Unfortunately, the fight itself doesn’t really live up to the hype because it’s incredibly easy. Knuckles telegraphs his moves like five seconds in advance, and they’re all easy to avoid or counter. Regardless, it does feel pretty good to whoop up on him, and the scene that follows makes up for it. By the way, as an aside, if you pay attention to the mural in the background of the Sonic/Knuckles fight, it’s of Hyper Sonic chasing down Robotnik with the Master Emerald in the Doomsday Zone. Apparently, it’s supposed to be some sort of ancient prophecy, so that’s a pretty cool little detail they added to the game.

After the fight, Robotnik has decided that he no longer has to pretend to be on Knuckles’s side, and he busts into the Hidden Palace to steal the Master Emerald. Knuckles tries to stop him, but he gets electrocuted and Robotnik gets away. Then the floor beneath Sonic and Knuckles breaks away to reveal a path to Sky Sanctuary. You get a great moment where you see Knuckles pondering whether to ask Sonic for help, after realizing that he's been wrong about him all along, and eventually realizes he can’t do it by himself and tells him to follow him. You also get a sprite of Knuckles clearly exhausted from being electrocuted by Robotnik. This scene, with no dialogue and only body language to communicate meaning, is better than any cutscene any 3-D Sonic game has to offer. This isn’t exactly a high standard, I realize, but still, the point is that you don’t necessarily need to have extensive voice acting and dialogue to be able to have a cool scene and communicate some sort of emotion. Sonic 3 & Knuckles manages to do it quite well in a 30 second scene with no dialogue whatsoever, and it’s really cool.

I’m sure some of you are thinking I’m really overblowing how good this scene is, and maybe I am, but these are based on my own personal feelings and attachment to these things. This moment also completely flipped my opinion on Knuckles as someone I hated to someone I felt like I had misunderstood this whole time, and now I really liked him. It’s just a really cool “face turn” moment.

But again, action games aren't all "on rails." Uncharted's a pretty big exception to that rule. I don't think this is a matter of "genre expectations" here.

But really, if you can enjoy a game as on rails as Uncharted, I don't see why you can't enjoy FFXIII because it's linear.

Maybe it's because I've never understood the "linear = bad" argument from the beginning anyway.

I agree with you to an extent!

Linear isn't bad if it's a rollercoaster ride of fun like Uncharted.

FFXIII has an action-packed battle system so it probably won't bother me too much either.

However if Zelda or turn-based RPGs decided to do that, it would not be so good!

JRPGs in general are structured in linear fashion. Problem is, I'm pretty sure that Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Mother 3, Skies of Arcadia, and Super Mario RPG don't start with trudges throw long narrow corridors for the first 20 hours, and that their storylines are way more interesting.

28. Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
Quote: “Put some thought into your actions and you will eliminate your regrets.”
external image

I’ve always been a big fan of Chun-Li (I prefer using the hyphen in her name, looks better), especially since the Alpha games. She’s a lot of fun to use, and she’s become more fun over the years as they’ve added more moves to her repertoire. She’s got some crazy stuff. I love the Lightning Legs, the Spinning Bird Kick, that rising kick move, and the Kikosho. Giant vacuum fireball, yessir. I’m generally not a fan of charge characters, but Chun-Li is the exception because she doesn’t really “feel” like a charge character, at least to me.

Chun-Li has a pretty interesting story, too. She’s an Interpol agent investigating Shadaloo (By the way, can I say how dumb the name “Shadaloo” is? I always thought the name “Shadowlaw” that they used in the anime sounded much cooler), and at the same time, she’s searching for M. Bison, whom she suspects killed her father. In Street Fighter Alpha 2, she finally meets him and tries to fight him, only to get beat down by him and have him mock her father’s death as he leaves. It’s not quite on the level of, “For you, the day Bison graced your village was the greatest day of your life, but for me, it was Tuesday” from the movie, but still, it was cool. She continues to train and grow strong, and it’s implied that she may have been the winner of the Street Fighter II tournament. Personally, I find it ridiculous that Capcom has never announced who officially won the tournament, but that’s a story for another time. After SFII, she tries to go home and be a family girl, but she gets brought back into action in SFIII and SFIV.

I actually like Chun-Li’s character design as well, even the hair buns and the thunder thighs. It’s a very unique (at least among western gamers, I suppose) and instantly recognizable look. Plus, like I said before, Chun-Li is just a fun character to use. I know generally charge characters are turtlers, but I feel like you can actually get aggressive with Chunners, too, which is why I like playing as her and she doesn’t feel like a traditional charge character to me. Granted, I certainly don’t play anywhere near professional level. This is just my personal experience playing with average people and against the computer here. Regardless, I find her fun to use, and that’s enough for me.

Guile and to a lesser degree Honda is really the only charge character who should be play defensively.

Lets' take a look at the SF charge characters (I'm sure I'll forget some)

Blanka - if you're turtling with Blanka, you're playing him wrong
Vega - he's fast, which means turtling is a bad idea, as you're not taking advantage of his speed
Bison - have you ever seen a defensive Bison? Me neither
Chun-Li - see Vega
Honda - often defensive (there's a vid of a HILARIOUS Honda mirror somewhere but I can't find it), but going in can be very effective with some Ochio Throw shenanigans, HHS-pressure and butt-smash crossups
Guile - the most defensive charge character, without a doubt.
Balrog - agressive rushdown style
Dee-jay - can be very agressive with his cross-ups, though depending on the game and match-ups turtling is the better option

Chun Li and Vega can be played fine defensively. They've got good pokes and speed helps on defense as well. In fact I think in the majority of games she's in Chun Li is optimally played in a defensive fashion. Vega not as much but he's capable. The other ones yeah I agree.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite new series of this generation?

Valkyria Chronicles, probably. Dragon Age and Mass Effect are also in contention though.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite video game female?

Rin Tohsaka from F/SN. Or if you're preferring non VN characters Tira from Soul Calibur I suppose. Or Serra from FE7. Now that I list them out all three of these characters sport pigtails. I guess it's a design weakness of mine. Not that I only like the characters for their design, or anything, but they do all have good ones, as all characters I like tend to!

Yes that was a random 2 sentence tangent but whatever. I blame your talk about "hair buns" which look terrible. (not huge on Chun Li as you probably already know!)

More like Mr. SFII Expert, really. I've also played lots of SFAlpha and Alpha2, but the SFIV games never really clicked (I still put over 100 hours into the games, but that's nothing compared to how much SFII or Alpha I've played), I don't like 3rd strike and am pretty terrible at any non-SF fighting game, with the exception being Marvel 3, where I'm semi-decent.

28. Sonic Generations
external image

11/1/11 was a great day, huh? First Uncharted 3, now Sonic Generations, back to back on this list. As many of you know, I’m not a big fan of 3-D Sonic games as a whole. I don’t outright hate the concept of 3-D Sonic, but they’re largely disappointing to me compared to how good the old Genesis games are. After the series hit rock bottom with Sonic 2006, Sega actually started slowly moving it back in the right direction. I know we often mock how dumb the whole “Werehog” thing is in Sonic Unleashed, but the day time levels and the new “speed boost” meter thing they introduced were great, so there was some progress, at least. Then they took a big step back toward respectability with Sonic Colors by getting rid of all the dumb gimmicks and “friends” that had been weighing the series down since the jump to 3-D. No Werehogs, no guns, no fishing expeditions, just good old-fashioned Sonic speed, and the new powerups introduced were actually fun to use and relevant for finding—wait for it—alternate paths!

Then it came time for Sonic’s 20th anniversary special, and after Sega showed how to do it totally wrong with Sonic’s 15th anniversary (Sonic 2006, for those of you who are bad at math), they showed you how to do a proper tribute to your fans with this one. They brought back Classic Sonic to join forces with Modern Sonic, featuring a level from each major console release for the series for each character (except for 3-D Blast and Sonic CD lawl, but at least Sonic CD gets a boss fight. 3-D Blast got nothin’). It was like Sega was telling the fans, “Hey, we haven’t forgotten what made Sonic great, and we haven’t forgotten you.” I’m sure that’s my naïveté talking there, but that’s how I felt. This is how a tribute game should be done. Like, seriously, Super Mario Bros. should copy this concept for some anniversary edition (I guess 30th is next, right? Man, hard to believe it’s almost that old).

But man, I love Sonic Generations. I love the whole darn thing. I know I’m probably rambling here, but you have to understand, this is a game I’ve been waiting for 15 years to see. Any other big Sonic fans out there know what I’m talking about (although you may not necessarily share my love of Generations). Both Classic and Modern Sonic levels are fantastically designed and bring out the strengths of 2-D and 3-D Sonic. I could probably talk in-depth about all of the levels, but this is meant to be a short writeup, not a long review, so I’ll spare you! Regardless, it was great to revisit remade levels like Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary, and even 3-D Sonic levels like City Escape and Rooftop Run. They remixed the soundtrack for these levels and offer both a Classic and Modern mix for each, and the game also offers you the ability to collect other classic Sonic tunes and play them in any level you want. You want to play Flying Battery Zone music in Crisis City? Have at it. You want to play Knight of the Wind on Green Hill Zone? Well, you can! That being said, if there was one drawback to Sonic Generations, it’s that the game is too short. They needed more levels. I wish they had included a level from Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles instead of just using Sky Sanctuary, but they are considered one game in Sonic canon, so whaddya gonna do?

They also had interesting “side missions” which you could complete for various collectibles, such as songs, artwork, etc. Most of them were pretty easy, but for the most part, they were an enjoyable addition to the game. Sonic Generations also carried over the Red Ring Stars from Sonic Colors, which are basically five items hidden throughout each level that can generally only be reached by using a route other than the straightforward one, so it encourages exploration (which is the best kind of collectible, by the way. You don’t have collectibles for the sake of having collectibles, darn it!). You also get a song or piece of artwork for each one you found, which was nice. Each level also had its own Trophy you could unlock if you fulfilled certain conditions, like beating Classic Green Hill Zone in under a minute, which is actually really fun to do, because one of the awesome things about Sonic games is watching yourself get noticeably better as you replay levels. There are very few games I can think of where your improvement is as noticeable as it is in a Sonic game. It’s such a fulfilling experience. If there’s ever a game I decide to Platinum, it’ll probably be this one, which is saying something, because I’m not a completionist by any means, but Sega did collectibles right with this game.

There are so many things I could say about Sonic Generations, but I’ll just leave it at that. Originally, I was hoping this game would mean a revival for the Sonic series now that Sega seems to have “rediscovered” the winning formula, but if the rumors that they’re planning to reboot the series entirely end up being true, it may turn out to be Sonic’s swan song. We’ll have to see this reboot to find out for sure, of course, but if that was truly the last we see of Sonic the Hedgehog as we know him, I’m glad he at least got the opportunity to go out with a Sonic Boom.

Bonus Question: What series would you like to see experience a revival?

It doesn't necessarily have to be a series that's no longer being made, but it can be a series you've felt has "lost its way" over time and you'd like to see be brought back to where it belongs.

And man, that was quite the writeup. It's just hard for me to contain my fanboyism when it comes to certain things!

I'm surprised I'd never heard of any hype for this game before. Concept seems neat.

As for the Bonus Question, Double Dragon by far. This wouldn't just revive the series it could revive beat em ups as a whole, really.

Zelda Zelda Zelda

Also I still feel like modern Sonic games take away control from the player too much.

Bonus: Deus Ex. I want a sequel with a non-Mary Sue protagonist and an in character JC. And no crap like Human Revolution.

Bah, now I kinda sorta want to play Sonic Generations.

Bonus Question: What series would you like to see experience a revival?

Gonna go with Romance of the Three Kingdoms, not just because the last game came out over 4 years ago and there's still no word of a new one, but also because the last 2 games were significantly worse than the games beforehand, in my opinion!

What series would you like to see experience a revival?

I want a Breath of Fire game, dammit. But Capcom reviving that series is even less likely than them reviving some of their other killed series. >_>

I even liked Dragon Quarter to a certain extent, despite the game being very different from the previous installments. BoF3 is the best though.

The Legacy of Kain.

Good writeup. Sonic Generations is a good game. Too damn short though. =\
