After replaying some retro Final Fantasy games, I think I have to say Final Fantasy IV is the hardest one. For some reason, the random encounters seem quite hard for me in this one. I never got a Game Over, but I found myself having to flee from MANY of the random encounters throughout the game. What really makes it hard in my opinion is the whole formation thing (Cecil is really the only one capable of taking pummeling) and the fact that monsters seem SO MUCH FASTER than your characters. I swear they attack me 5 times before I get a turn haha.
Anyway, would like to hear some opinions on this, because I recently read a review saying FFIV (SNES) was the easiest FF ever and I couldn't believe my eyes, ha.

Hard to decide since none of them are particularly difficult and can be broken pretty easily. VIII would probably be the hardest out of those if you were unaware of how it worked.
Hrezs posted... Played VI-X and tactics is probably the hardest I've come across
I could see why FFT would be difficult, but I remember loving that game so much that I tried to find every little thing I could, which caused me to level up far more than needed

I'd actually say XIII. The game has the fantastic idea of letting you restart a battle anytime you lose without losing all your progress, so it doesn't seem that bad, but there are a number of bosses and even some regular encounters that gave me a hard time.
assuming you play each game normally and don't over level/grind like crazy, FFT is the hardest one. The story battles can be quite difficult if you don't grind in the game at least a few times.

IV, V, Tactics, XIII. Not sure which one but the rest were definitely easier.
VI, VII and IX were likely the easiest of the bunch. VIII was definitely the easiest to completely shatter but until you did that it was an okay challenge. X almost joined them but several mid-to-late-game bosses offered a level of challenge that was relatively noteworthy.
XII at average levels was a bit of a hardship but not so much as could be found in the aforementioned toughest entries. But really, none were hard.
IV-VI aren't hard, they just require the classic "grind before the last dungeon"
VII is easy
VIII is easy
IX is easy
X is interesting, after beating it once, it becomes the easiest FF game there is. But I actually found some of the boss battles very difficult on my first playthrough. Some of this may be this being my first real JRPG and I was pretty young when I played it. For instance, there is a boss that gets broken by casting reflect on it so that when it cures, it heals you. I just didn't think about these things my first playthrough.
I thought XII was hard, but I just don't think I was playing the game correctly >_>
XIII was a mixed bag
Tactics was crazy hard. I barely got into the game and got stuck
