Bleh. It has one of the blandest and most forgettable soundtracks in the series. In fact, I think only FFII really compares in that category.

I can remember that really quirky vaguely Middle Eastern sounding boss theme that plays against certain bosses, and...that's about it.

overall it's pretty great, but it's weird how the overworld and battle themes, two of the songs you will hear the most, are below average. i'd take just about any other battle song in the series over 8, and while the overworld is decent, 4, 6, 7, and 9 are all much better.

and yeah FFVII might have the best overworld theme

but just so many regular songs in FFVIII are so good

I beat FF8 most recently of any FF game aside from FFT and I have to strain to remember any songs that aren't Force Your Way, Man With the Machine Gun, The Landing, Liberi Fatali, and Maybe I'm a Lion/The Extreme. Oh and the card game theme I guess, whatever that's called.

And then when I strain I realize the songs I was forgetting were pretty boring. Hell I only really like Extreme, Force Your Way, and The Landing out of those, too.

Really? I feel like basically every game whose soundtrack I consider better than "decent" I could name more songs from than that that I really liked. Maybe not the exact names but I'd know which ones I was talking about.

I wouldn't necessarily be able to name more tracks by name from most soundtracks (me knowing a lot by name for FFVIII is just because they're well named not because they're actually better tracks) but I could definitely get the sound of a lot more than that if the soundtrack was notable. Most of the other FF games I can remember most of the tracks on them by sound, even the ones that aren't too great. FF9 would be the only one I can't and that's because I only played it once 12 years ago which is less times or less recent than every other FF. (in the process of fixing that now though and I can still recall more from that game than FFVIII)

That and I'm pretty sure the only songs that play more than once or twice during the game out of that are Man With the Machine Gun (which is fairly rare anyway), Force Your Way, and the Card Game Theme (which isn't actually very good, just catchy), which was more my point. There are a decent amount of one shot wonders on the soundtrack but none of the common stuff is any good.

Well actually thinking about what I'm claiming more carefully, I can't remember most of FFII, FFIII, or FFXII either, and while I recall more than 7 tracks offhand from 3 and 12, I actually can only remember 3 tracks from FF2 (two battle themes and the overworld theme-- which in some ways makes it a more memorable soundtrack given how often those themes play)

Still though. Point stands. None of those games have great soundtracks either (though 3 and 12 at least are better than 8)

Well you're a FFXII fanboy so that goes without saying.

FFXII I can only easily remember the esper battle, boss fight, the music that plays for most of the overworld, battle on the bridge, the first town's theme, CAPTAIN BASCH town theme, the westersand theme, feywood.

Actually struggling to get more than 7 there too-- that's only 8. Last two are excellent (Feywood beats anything FFVIII has) but yeah FFVIII vs FFXII isn't too clear cut thinking about it again, though at least more of those themes are fairly common.

I really like the battle music in this game (both the regular and the super awesome LAGUNA VERSION). Eyes on Me is kind of nice I guess, kind of smaltzy. Fisherman's Wharf or whatever is god tier. Everything else I either disliked or was unmemorable.

Yeah, that always struck me as strange as well. Nearly every FFVIII battle theme is great except for the regular battle theme, and I've never really liked Blue Fields.

Huh?

Practically every area has different music, the only ones I can remember for sure share a track are Giza Plains and Tchita Uplands (or is it Ozmone and one of those? I always get that one mixed up I think). Maybe the two Sandseas both share music, can't recall.

Uh... meant "the one that plays for most of the overworld towards the beginning of the game". It spans quite a few areas, or the area is very large. Either way. It's kind of an upbeat track. Looking through the soundtrack it's the Dalmasca Eastersand theme. Not a great track in any case but that's the one that sticks with me. Either cause the area is really big or because I just played a lot there early game I dunno.
