It's hard to explain what I feel when I hear that song and see that picture of Tidus.

FFX is the only game that makes me feel this way. I get all warm and fuzzy and ****. Nostalgia doesn't quite cover it. This game brings me back to the best days of my life and with all the good things happening to me, FFX was always the best part of the day.

Me and my little brother would sit around for HOURS and HOURS taking turns, watching, playing, being backseat drivers. We had separate blitzball teams and argued over which one would win.

However, I literally changed its listing as an "FFX-2 track" to just "FFX" and I pretend to this day that it is somewhere on the original FFX's OST.

To be fair, the song plays without you ever actually having to play X-2, so it can fall safely within the realm of exceptions!

Although I do like X-2. It's certainly not the plague some people make it out to be.

I think the first 10 minutes of X-2 might be the most embarrassing video game thing you could get caught playing

FFX-2 is so bad that, as a man who never really considered himself all that assertive feminist, I still felt horribly offended by its portrayal of women, so much so that I can't imagine how much a poor girl gamer felt while enduring it.

Yeah, I suppose titles like Tomb Raider are technically worse in terms of fanservice content, but the difference is that women knew to steer well clear of Tomb Raider from the beginning, while Square-Enix basically was like "hey, ladies, here are some awesome, multifaceted, well-rounded female characters for you to like and identify with in FFX! Now watch as we brutally massacre any semblance of likable qualities in these women and transform them into living, walking male-gaze stereotypes!"

"FFX-2! With pop music! Massages! Playing dress-up dolls and changing into a variety scantily-clad outfits! Breast comparison scenes!" Yes that could in no way be interpreted as insulting to women.

...They also managed to completely ruin Spira in the course of a two-year gap between FFX and FFX-2 and transform it into something borderline unrecognizable, despite having virtually the same graphics for all locations, which is a fairly impressive feat in and of itself.

And FFX's amazingly bittersweet tragic ending was maimed with some fairy tale 'happily ever after' crap that completely nullified the sacrifices in the first game.

Aside from that, yeah, I suppose FFX-2 was alright.

to be fair square has never portrayed women as particularly intelligent or capable, maybe not so openly but FF games being sexist goes back waaay farther than that. and yuna might be totally different in FFX-2 but she was already a terrible character in FFX that no one should have identified with to begin with

Sure, some of the mechanics in Tomb Raider might've actually been all right. Some of the mechanics in Duke Nukem might've worked out great, too. Maybe those games have kickass gameplay or something. But when given the choice, I generally try to avoid overtly supporting brazen misogynistic chauvinism in my videogames.

(Unless it's actually being critiqued, or displayed realistically and with consequences in a piece like LA Noire)

Yuna was 'alright' in FFX, I'd say. She's not the incredible character some people like to talk her up as, but she's not offensive or anything. There are worse in FFX, much worse in the series!

I liked Yuna just fine in FFX.
She wasn't an amazing portrayal of a female character or anything, nothing mindblowing, nothing revolutionary, nothing insightful, but not every character in gaming needs to be a feminist treatise. She didn't actively offend me just by existing. She was prototypical and silly and a bit soft-spoken but she also acted realistically (if not always favorably) in the context of her surroundings and the fantasy world in which she was raised.

By contrast I found myself repeatedly wishing Yuna would die a terrible death in FFX-2, because her mere presence insulted the Yuna I remembered from FFX.

I made the mistake of giving FFX-2 the benefit of the doubt and purchasing it because I loved FFX.

It was a mistake I sorely regretted.

I've had my opinions of songs change after playing the game, so I can definitely get behind this argument

Lara Croft hasn't been portrayed that way in years, and she never was the character in-game that she was marketed as. Certainly not worse off than the FF chicks! The new Tomb Raider is making her young and inexperienced, but she'll likely still have the same character qualities she has always had.

I honestly can't remember a more obnoxious character in that game, I never understood why tidus gets ripped on so much when yuna does so much more to annoy(ok I do understand it, she's kinda cute, but her personality is still terrible)

The voice acting was annoying (not so much the voice, but the actual delivery of lines), but she didn't really get on my nerves. Lulu and Kimahri weren't annoying, but they were worse characters, at least as far as that main group goes. Actually, Lulu was kinda annoying thinking about it. We'll go with her.

About the only character in the main cast I actively disliked in the original FFX was Lulu, and I actually considered her one of the 'better' voice-acted roles.
(NOTE: Almost all of the voice-acting in FFX was horrific by today's standards, but still.)

Auron and Rikku were about the only two characters I felt were both well developed and (comparably) well VAed. (Even then, I understand why Rikku's voice may grate on some, but what can I say, I liked it.)

Tidus and Yuna had fairly poor voice-acting performances (probably not the fault of the actors themselves, actually) but outside of that context, their characterizations were fine. If you could somehow remove the voice acting and play the game 'silent' like earlier FF titles, I bet Tidus and Yuna would have been better received.

Yuna was actually probably better VAed in FFX-2, but the character went through such a terrible retrogression that I couldn't bother to appreciate the comparably minor vocal improvements.

kimahri is just kind of there to me, he's awful in that he's completely uninteresting, but in the end he's just background and barely affects the game

don't recall lulu ever annoying me particularly...yuna it's there on all levels, not just the voice acting but the dialogue itself and her decision making too. I guess people defend her and tidus as being "realistic" but real life is full of annoying people that aren't likeable too, I play video games to get AWAY from those people -_- I don't agree that they're entirely realistic either but I think it's a weak defense

That's fair. A character being "realistic" doesn't make them likable. People usually pull that defense when someone talks about said character being annoying or dumb, as though it makes it better!

My "holy **** nostalgia" FFX thing is when Tidus stands on the boat and they have that FMV as you pull into Luca for the first time. Definitely a warm feeling.

Besaid island more like zzzsaid island. Possibly my least favorite track of the FFX soundtrack just because it's so bland. That being said it's not bad in the game for what it does but why would anyone care about it either way I just don't get it.

Besaid Island isn't boring...it's quaint, like the town it so rightfully claims.


I won't lie, if I had never played FFX, Besaid Island wouldn't be so high. But I could say that about EVERY song on my video game list. The only one that stands alone is To Zanarkand.

But I have played FFX and Besaid Island comes in perfectly. Here you are, just barely escaping a water monster and masked terrorists. You're in a new world with monsters and you're all alone. You've faced nothing but darkness and a creeping sense of finality thanks to the opening scene.

And then, without warning, you're greeted with a lush paradise that doubles as a small seaside village. The town may be little but each person has a silent confidence, this secret they all share of being more important than even they understand. The music fits it perfectly; while the instruments are few, each plays its part tremendously:

The synth line steadies the show; fast paced and consistent, The Piano charms you with it's simplicity, and the drums show up unexpectedly to shake up the senses and disappear just as quickly. Everything bounces off each other so freely and creates a uniformed sound where everything stands out but nothing stands off.
