Maybe you could learn to empathise with the cats.

They didn't choose to be brought into your parent's home, they don't understand why they were brought into your parent's home, but now they're there and they're just trying to find a way to fit in without being spray bottled. They're stuck with you just as much as you're stuck with them.

And for all you say about animals being problematic, they can also be great companions and great company. They are hard work but they're worth the effort.

I had a little cat (Link) that was the most disruptive little nutbar on the planet, but it was also a really fun companion and he was probably my best friend for the 8 years he was with me until last year when we had to get him put to sleep. I wouldn't trade that time for anything else and I never would have experienced that if I'd been close minded about cats and wrote them off as problem causers.
