She was his chosen successor from the more right wing faction of the party. Although his faction no longer exists the party felt the rise of far right parties like Sanseito means the party is too liberal now (the last two PMs were from the centrist liberal side of the party). Since the LDP no longer has a majority government it has to work with either parties to the center, left, or right to get a prime minister. Although most people thought they would pick the more centrist Koizumi, Takaichi ended up being chosen by the party. It's hard to say how long this will last or if it will actually win the LDP back the conservative vote (because they lost more of it to center right parties than they did to far right ones).
