Dels 09/03/25 4:31:38 PM #23: | ok so i don't agree that "the art is a clash of a bunch of random stuff is good because it's for story reasons" as a defense most areas look like a designer just went "well this tree is pretty so let's throw a few over there, and then there's this shiny ethereal stuff, let's sprinkle some in, and uh, there's a cool model of this thing let's crash that into a wall somewhere, add some floating rocks, and, uh, yeah" and i don't really buy "well the world was created by a painter" as an excuse for this. i mean, painters in real life make very detailed drawings all the time, they don't just throw a bunch of random stuff everywhere! maybe i'm forgetting some lore justification (like that renoir just threw a bunch of shit everywhere because he was trying to destroy the painting or whatever, which i think is why there's just random splotches of paint everywhere) but still, if i made a game where all you do is explore empty white rooms and then said "well there's a story reason - it's a game about a painter who is too lazy to paint their house" that wouldn't mean the white rooms are suddenly great design for the first 60 hours. (and, again, i like this game's art - i'm a sucker for beautiful etheral floating abyss things. but when my friends see me play they just say "this looks horrible, it's just a bunch of random stuff all over the place") and as to the claim "the characters all look the same but that's because they're painted", i think there's literally zero evidence of that. the characters look the same because they were made with whatever asset kit the devs had. anything beyond that is maybe a post-hoc justification. i do not believe at all that if they had gone with another story for this game, they would've suddenly made more diverse character models and that gustave's sister wouldn't have the exact same face as sophie. ...
