Sometimes 1st party, sometimes 3rd party. The 3rd party ones were clearly inferior, but the 1st party ones would eventually fail on me as well.

But yeah I'll never forget when the dreamcast first came out and the sega brand VMUs was legitimately hard to find for awhile. My brother bought some random 3rd party card and that piece of shit couldn't keep save data for more than like 3 days. I restarted sonic adventure so many times because of that.

Final Fantasy VII was my nightmare experience. I was like 40+ hours in and nearing the end of the game, when all of my data wiped. I was obviously pissed, but I started a new game and made the long trudge through the game again and then it happened again as I neared the end of the game. At that point, I said fuck it, and just asked a friend to copy his save data so I could just play the last dungeon.
