We are finally ahead in the timeline relative to the end of Trails 5 The military guys make an offer we can't refuse. Crossbell is recovering from its endgame mcguffin events, so it's incredibly vulnerable to Calvardian invasion now. And Erebonia is in a civil war, which also makies it vulnerable. We need to end the civil war, or we are at serious risk of becoming a democratic republic soon (wait a minute, that's not a bad thing!) Oh so our job is just to liberate the royal family, and presumably they will end the war themselves.
