I called one recently (in the US) for my gf. They let you to talk on the phone with a therapist, and optionally could send out a crisis team to your location to de-escalate or help figure out a safety plan. They also called the next day to check how things were going, and were able to give me some resources for outpatient psychiatric services. They seemed to genuinely want to help, and did not at all jump to involuntary commitment. I think they would only do something like that if you express actual intent to threaten your own life or others

YMMV with other crisis lines, but I think you should give it a try to see what options are available to you. Good luck
The de escalation and safety plan stuff is actually pretty cool. Okay I think I'll give it a shot as soon as I can.
