yeah its best not to question too much, its more about the experience and atmosphere.

the infected definitely have some sense of whats going on, so theyre aware when another is infected. (We also see a bunch of infected sleeping / hiding together during the day time in 28 Days.)

I dont think we ever got an actual explanation, even back in 2002, on what the virus actually is. Its basically pure rage and activates violent primal urges in the infected. But I think the writers needed reasons for the virus to spread quickly so we never get much answers.

and to be fair, if this really did happen, the small amount of survivors WOULD be confused, the government wouldnt be telling them anything and theyd be left on their own, just like in the movie
