I'd say the way this comes off varies a lot depending on your setting; one of the important things is what sort of position the group is in overall. Like, if someone's prejudiced against elves in a traditional fantasy sort of setting where they're powerful and doing well, it feels very different than it does in a setting where elves are an oppressed minority (my go-to example being Dragon Age, in part because you can also play as one yourself).

It's definitely something that sticks out negatively when you think about it; usually when I see someone else trying to address it (in fanfiction, say) this is either taken seriously as a problem to correct, or worked around by the actual situation being some other kind of weird magic thing (or possibly both).
