I always forget there's a huge competitive scene for this game that is actually backed up by Nintendo...unlike Smash.

I want to say Nintendo's reluctance to support Smash at the same level they are with Splatoon may be down to the fact that Splatoon is a completely-inhouse production from them, while Smash has always been developed by separate entities (Hal Labs for SSB and Melee, Game Arts and Sora for Brawl, and Bandai Namco and Sora for SSB4 and Ultimate).

There may also be an issue with the represented IPs in Smash that Nintendo don't completely own. Even with SSB and Melee, Nintendo has split ownership of Kirby, Pokemon, EarthBound, and Fire Emblem, with Hal Labs, The Pokemon Company, Shigesato Itoi, and Intelligent Systems, respectively.

Then again, I could be wrong on this.
