#23:

i was skim checking the comments after my last post on the prior topic and i noticed some talk about 2014's anime, and since that was one of the years i watched a decent amount(https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/bb581ae9.png) i figured i might as well say what my favourites that year were

i get it wasn't for everyone by then but liked the conclusion to initial d a lot and still consider it a ways better than mf ghost s1 at a minimum
yama no susume s2 is a top 10 anime season for me of anything so that alone definitely carries the year for me
madoka clones as they may have been, yuuki yuuna and selector infected+spread wixoss were both amazing imo
kawai complex was legit tbh
mekakucity was also a strong showing and underappreciated given it was still in the middle of peak monogatari years (and nisekoi was there too i guess)
wake up girls is still one of the most uniquely worthwhile idol anime and it deserved a lot better at the time (even if it fell off in quality hard past s2)
a lot of anticipated shows of the time fell off in due course, such as aldnoah, terror in resonance, trinity seven, mahouka, black bullet, tokyo ghoul, glasslip, (maybe) m3, and chaika... but some were still at least solid even while underperforming, which is why i'm not putting akame ga kill, shingeki no bahamut or noragami in the same category personally (i get others definitely would disagree though)
besides yamasusu s2, while 2014 did lack the presence of stuff like kiniro mosaic or non non biyori on the cgdct/iyashikei front, it did also have gochiusa and somewhat unique productions like hanayamata and sora no method to make up for it

and short anime had arguably their peak year then, with ai mai mii s2, both seasons of strange+, hacka doll and tesagure s2 all among my favourites in that niche, even if one DOESN'T of course count yamasusu s2 lol (and they're unlikely to ever leave that upper eschelon given the state of modern short anime...)

on the ova side, the japan animator expo series brought about a lot of great pilots, and the young animator training project then known as anime mirai also had a strong year then too (even if the projects then never got the recognition little witch academia or death billiards did). it was a bit of a nothing year for feature length films though, outside of marnie and expelled from paradise if you want to be exceedingly generous (i wouldn't even be putting it in the discussion as a key film release if not for the sequel tbh)
