Oh joy, took longer than expected but the conspiracies are being spouted now.
Just because 100% of your life revolves around one thing in the news doesn't make every other news item revolve around it in reality.

...Is GameFAQs not also social media?
"Social media" is too broad a term.
I'm sick of going into paragraphs of detail on it, so the short version.

"Legacy" social media like message boards, char rooms, comments sections for articles... Are usually ok. Yes you have hives of scum and villainy like 4chan, but that's the point. You KNOW on some level you're consciously entering a hive of scum and villainy when you go there.

"Viral" social media like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook is the problem. Their whole model is using algorithms to feed you related content and keep you on their platform and to interact with itself. You could start watching some stuff on woodworking and end up on some alt right pipeline thru "suggested" content all w/o leaving the website you were on. Also basically encourages cross-platform flame wars and drama b/c it generates clicks.

When people complain about "social media" they almost always mean viral social media, exclusively.

Those are my names for the two basic types. And it gets messy w/ stuff like reddit (mixes the two a lot) and youtube (started legacy, turned into viral gradually after google bought it).
