Topic	Was pre ordering a game ever actually useful?

There was a good long period of maybe a decade where GameStop was going so hard on pre-orders that they would intentionally under stock new games so that if you tried to buy it on release day they would tell everyone they were sold out and they should have pre-ordered. The only time I saw this situation happen was with Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on release day. I was told all regular edition copies were gone, so they up-sold me to the [last] LCE copy they had for my system.
