IIRC it was just an extra detail mentioned in either their Pokedex entries or the Scarlet/Violet Book. NBIceman posted... I would contend that portmanteaus are still marginally more clever than just picking a couple of words and putting a space between them. Something like Arcanine may not be the absolute peak of creativity, but it's better than Blazing Hound. Arcanine is fine. It's stuff like Talonflame that's the most "lazy" sounding.
