I don't really have a reason to not believe him about his situation (aside from Masae, that just seems weird and malicious that she'd leave that entire thing out even if she wanted to keep it private, her wording made him seem like a creep and everything that happened between them was unwarranted), but I didn't really know just how deep in a hole he was mentally. He's incredibly lucky to have a supportive girlfriend and very supportive friends to help him through this as well as the professional help he's been getting. It seems like none of this should've ever gone public if everything was settled privately already.
