Eight years of him developing superpowers, becoming nigh omniscient and he's even shown to be able to influence the past. So many characters died to protect him. Jojen, Summer, Hodor, Three-Eyed Raven and the children of the forest, Theon. Yet the biggest impact his powers had on the overarching story was revealing Jon's parentage... which ultimately didn't matter and only contributed to Dany going mad. People were theorizing he would warg into a dragon or even into the Night King, whatever way his massive powers could make a difference in either of the big battles.
