This isn't surprising at all at this point. I think it's incredibly wrongheaded because it assumes Iran as some kind of victim when they are not, but a few things fuel this;

A: The premise that Israel is committing a genocide will lead to people uncritically supporting regimes that fight Israel even though Iran is obviously bad

B: The desire of neoliberals/neocons the past few decades to invade Iran has morphed an opposition that at times views Iran as a victim

I think people supporting Iran need to keep in mind that it is not the subject of an ongoing genocide and that it is a religious fundamentalist state equitable to the worst instincts of what a Christian Nationalist state would look like. Just because they are targeting a genocidal organization doesn't make them a good government.
