Agreed. The jingoism was also at a fever pitch at the time as well, so you weren't exactly going to be getting many kudos by taking a principled stance against the war. It is actually scary how much under Bush's spell the country was at the time. Of course since we now know how the story ends, it seems silly, but people were lapping up everything Bush was selling at the time. I can definitely see how people can get wrapped up in fascism regimes, it had a very similar feel at the time, even if you break the brainwashing, you are going to find nothing but hatred and difference directed at you if you choose to oppose the entrenched party and most people just don't have the stomach to endure that.
