It's a problem in fiction, too. The default protagonist in readers heads is cishet white dude unless explicitly named and described otherwise.

When we get rid of that kind of thing as an assumption, then we can move on to the other part of your idea that no one needs to be "out" and proud because it's been normalized.

Little things help get us there, like when straight people say "partner" instead of "wife/husband/bf/gf" and so on.
