The gap between instant blackout and 30 seconds of suffering before death is enormous, if you give a shit about suffering. If you see the difference between an animal basically being "turned off" and an animal being strung up and bled out in a panic as nitpicking... I dunno, that seems wrong-headed to me.

Obviously there are endless facets of animal farming and slaughter that can be discussed, and imo they're worth being discussed. Dismissing such concerns as "death is death is death and the details don't matter" is disconcerting.

There are definitely ways to kill animals that are not okay, I just don't think a few seconds of suffering alters the ethical problems of consuming meat in the first place. It's far more concerning how animals are treated when they're being cared for and not the very last seconds of their life.

It's kind of like the death penalty. My problem with the death penalty isn't whether it's done by injection, hanging, firing squad, has, electric chair, or something else. My problem is that it's being done at all.

So as long as livestock is slaughtered efficiently the specific method used doesn't change anything for me. Quick and painless deaths are not suddenly ok if the animal lived a life of suffering beforehand, either.
