They were basically super OP artificial intelligence created by a once-benevolent god trying to give his subjects the same powers as him. They took note of how obsessive this god and his subjects were in their pursuits and once they discovered how to achieve immortality they hid their findings from the god and swerved him; sealing his realm away from the rest of the multiverse while becoming the new de-facto "gods".
