When it comes down to economics both parties are corporatists, so are quite willing compromise if it means helping out their benefactors. Even on some of the side stuff it is mostly Kubuki theater, a lot of wind is exchanged, but ultimately nothing meaningful in terms of actual substance. Like illegal immigration for instance. The Republicans will talk the talk, but when it comes down to it, they like the cheap labor that comes along with it, so don't legislate against it too harshly.
