As far as Im concerned fuck any deity that uses you like that. They deserve no respect or worship whatsoever.

Depending on the religion, they might believe that if they are devout enough, God will always favour them. If he doesn't, then that's a failure on their part.

Alternatively, they believe the gods are fickle chess players, which makes it doubly important to persuade them to care about you.

Sure, that makes the gods pretty shitty, but we are where we are, and they are more likely to get you through the battle if you a nice to them, than if you tell them they don't deserve your respect.
