have seen some yt videos where some unruly passengers refuse to do this and get in big arguments with flight staff over this. Reportedly the safety concerns of this rule is overrated. That it is no safety risk Previously I'd agree. All the electrical equipment is heavily shielded. Mythbusters tested it even. They had to go to a plane junkyard and get some navigation guts with the shielding removed and internals exposed to get a reaction.
