Mario Timeline: I love this image. We all know it. As a parody of the Zelda timeline, it's flawless done. I even love how the top of it is 1-1. The divergence point being Yoshi rescuing or defeating the babies is wonderful. I love how the darkening of Mario's heart timeline leads him to become a referee. The randomness of where everything is placed is also to its great credit. Tomm Hulett should be proud of himself.

Nintendo (Company): Easily the best and most iconic video game company. They ARE video games. The Disney of video games, except less evil and toxic... but merely less.

Donkey Kong Country (Series): I have a dark secret I must now admit. I've never completed DKC3. I just wasn't in love with it, I'm sorry. Graphically, this is surely the best SNES series. I remember seeing my friend play it in kindergarten and having my mind blown. Completely destroys all competition. Aside from that, though... It's not a hot take to say that 2 > 1 > 3, right? I guess Tropical Freeze counts, okay, slot that behind 1 and above 3. Rebooting Donkey Kong as just his own hero with his own adventures was a good choice, and having zero Mario references in it was an even better decision. It really helps set DK apart as having his own series, with a more coherent story and logic (somehow!), but also some more fourth wall-breaking shenanigans. But in the all-important question of "are DKC1 or 2 better than SMW," I... think the answer is sort of yes? At least for 2. DKC definitely has better music. It has a very specific, coherent theme going, and it's just well-made in general. Sorry if that's an insane take. Was it just DK64 sucking that sort of killed the series? Oh also, if I didn't make this clear before, I hate King K. Rool. He always sucked. Diddy Kong is probably even a better 2P character than Luigi! He's at least more distinct, and the idea back then in the early 90s of the characters having completely different abilities in a platformer was rare. Even when Mario games did it, it's still not AS different as Diddy Kong's cartwheels, DK's strength, and Dixie's flying. Someone please tell me why they added Tiny Kong instead of just reusing Dixie, by the way, I never understood that. Just make her also able to shrink, there's no reason for that second character to exist.

Dungeon Duos (Mario Party): This is the first time someone's nominated one of the classic "you must work together in order to win" games. They can be infuriating if your partner sucks. But this one in particular is fine! It has four different little mechanics you have to master in order to win, and every section is different and challenging. I have no problems with it at all. Still not my favorite Mario Party minigame, though.

Jump Up, Super Star!: Oh, it's the Odyssey song, okay. It's really good. It absolutely nails the, like, 1940s/1950s style of music, except it actually sounds good. Yeah, I said, music from before like 1975 is mostly trash, sue me. Contextualizing it in-universe as Pauline singing is a little weird, though. What do you think their relationship was like? "Mario, I'm a little concerned. I feel sort of indebted to you for saving my life, but... I don't know how much we have in common? I have political aspirations, and you seem satisfied with your life as a plumber." "Wahoo!"

Pennington: I once showed a picture of Sherlock Holmes to my students, and they all knew him. I showed them a picture of Hercule Poirot, and no one knew him. It's unfortunate, because Poirot is the better series. And here Pennington is investing a murder on a train, exactly like Poirot, but he looks and acts like Sherlock Holmes. Anyway, the incompetent detective who thinks he's hot shit, but is actually pushed along by the competent assistant (in this case, Mario, but Pennington thinks it's Luigi) is a classic trope for a reason. One of the most memorable jokes in the entire Paper Mario series is him telling Bowser that "Luigi" beat him to a star, and Bowser being completely humiliated that Luigi got him. Hm, the Wiki says he's a "Bumpty," a race from Yoshi games, but I don't know if I believe that. He could easily just be a miscellaneous blue penguin. But do you understand why TYYD is the best thing ever, when even secondary characters you see for one chapter are this good?

Bob-Ombs: You can probably argue that this is technically the most important contribution of SMB2 to the greater Mario mainline series. Unlike Shy Guys, Bob-Ombs appear in a million games. They serve a really clear purpose, too, since explosives are easy to integrate into gameplay and story. I remember as a kid, getting Bombette in my party, and being like "won't she just die if she explodes? I wonder if she'll just bop the enemy instead," but no, she explodes, and just survives anyway. Okay, it's Mario, sure. I dunno. I feel like I could make some kind of kamikaze-based analysis of this, but I won't bother. Of note, however, is that Bob-Ombs are the only enemy race in Mario that have ever been displayed as having more than one faction. All Goombas just serve Bowser, etc, but Bob-Omb Battlefield was a legitimate civil war. The lore runs deep.

Kamek: It makes complete sense for Bowser to have a 'main' minion, both so that there's a lesser boss to fight, and for Bowser to have someone to talk to. I'm just shocked that it's still Kamek instead of Bowser Jr. Like, Toadsworth had essentially the exact same role as advisor, and yet he got erased. I guess Kamek also has the benefit of being a bad guy in the Yoshi games, where he's fine, but I don't know. I don't think of Kamek as one of the major Mario characters.
