I'm a follower not a leader. Rather than restricting it to VGM or a subset of VGM, this can be literally any song. My ONLY RULE is that no song exceeds 30 minutes and that you only nominate 1 song over 10 minutes, if any at all. You get 5 to use however you want, and you must understand it will probably take me a bit to actually get through everything (I like having my write-ups completed before making the ranking topic). I know nothing about music theory and I am not a musician in any way, so don't expect me to understand and interpret songs on that level. I am not smart enough.
THINGS I ENJOY IF YOU CARE:
Poppy melodies
Incorporations of noise, but in a melodic sense as opposed to being super harsh (Some of my favorite acts are Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Alvvays, My Bloody Valentine, etc.)
Downtuned guitars
Lo-fi
Songs from Gameboy, Genesis, C64, anything with a crunchier aesthetic really
Songs that start slow/quiet/simple but add layers to eventually become fast/loud/complex
Guys without vocal training as lead singers
Anything that sounds better while high (This is most songs tho tbh)
Hip-hop beats, can be instrumental or with vocals
Genres which usually tickle my fancy: Noise Pop, Noise Rock, Slacker Rock, Neo-Psychedelia, Shoegaze, Stoner Metal, Hypnagogic Pop, Jangle Pop, Twee Pop, to name a few
THINGS I DON'T ENJOY IF YOU CARE (Some exceptions to most of these though, if you're a risky fella):
Guttural vocals
Shrill vocals
Singers who sound like they're from Kentucky
Bombast
Music made to be played in clubs
Moody singer/songwriters (Think like Bjork or Fiona Apple, though I do like some of their stuff, it mostly bores me)
Heavy autotune, though it can sometimes get heavy enough to wrap around to being pretty neat
Genres which almost never tickle my fancy: Trap, Country Pop, Novelty, Grindcore, Metalcore, Death Metal, to name a few
Include links plz. Don't have a set amount I'm looking at. Maybe people will have burnout and I'll only get like 50. But if I get a few hundred so be it.
