Cost arent a factor for the birthrate and never was, otherwise childbirth would scale with ones economic class. The lower it is the more children people tend to have while its the opposite on the higher end.
The opportunity costs are more tangible for the middle and upper classes.
It's much harder to say you'll be a stay at home parent when it means leaving a 100k+ job and a decrease in lifestyle, than someone making significantly less income.
