- Super Mushroom Tier
Mario Party (Series)
Bob-omb Battlefield: One of the definitive first stages of all time. I sure as hell don't remember the first stage of Galaxy or Odyssey! I only remember Sunshine's first stage because I had to start the game over like five times to finally power through it to the end. Didn't beat that game until like 2012. Anyway, I think it's kind of interesting that there's just this battle going on between black and pink bob-ombs? Obviously the pink bob-ombs are angry about bob-omb racism and are fighting for their rights, and Mario heroically joins their cause because he's the hero. But like, in all seriousness, is this the only time in Mario history that there's just a straight-up battle going on that Mario isn't really party to? There's just an unrelated intra-bob-omb war going on well before Mario enters the fray.

Shy Guys on Stilts: Actually, was Yoshi's Island the game that introduced Yoshi being able to float? I just realized that. Contrary to the name, there are several shy guys in this stage who aren't on stilts. Look, there's not a lot for me to talk about here. This level doesn't have some crazy mechanic or insane difficulty, it's literally just a stage of walking and jumping around with some shy guys on stilts. The most difficult part is probably the dark section. I guess it is weirdly long, though. Don't know what motivated that decision. Is this a beloved major level among Yoshi lovers? Because to me, it couldn't be more of a "oh, it's that level" level.

Super Mario Sunshine: Back in the 2000s, everyone on Board 8 considered this to be the weakest full console Mario game. And yes, it is. I cannot in good conscience say it's better than SMB1, 2, 3, SMW, SM64, SMG, SMG2, SM3DW, or SMO. I'm not even sure I'd say it's better than the NSMB games. What it comes down to with SMS is how much stock you place in controls. Because the game controls like ass. SM64, it gets a pass, but every other Mario game needs to feel perfect. Mario needs to have the most polished, flawless controls in gaming. And SMS does not. Mario is so floatly and weirdly frictionless in this game. FLUDD adds an entire extra dimension to his movement, but it's not actually precise. It's just as awkward as Mario's normal movement, like every time you panickingly tap the hover mode (and you will, every time you flub a jump), you're going to float forward slightly despite not wanting to. And the fact that you have to replace the nozzles as you go along, it's like, one more awkward extra thing, even though it's just the new power-up. And then you have the added awkwardness of the FLUDDless levels, which wouldn't be a problem in a normal Mario game, but here are a nightmare because of weird Mario controls. So in pure gameplay terms, this is probably the weakest real game. And yet... this game introduces an entire city for you to explore, which we didn't get again until New Donk City (which yes completely embarrasses Delfino Plaza), the levels are diagetically integrated into the theme of a tropical island resort, and everything looks really nice. It's very difficult to put my feelings about this game into words, because it's simultaneously kind of bad and kind of good, but not damningly bad or overwhelmingly good. It all melds together into this really uneven mess, as opposed to SMG always being good, but having nothing memorable in it whatsoever. And I'll say this: even at Mario's weirdest and worst, his game is still way, way better than the best Sonic, Crash, Spyro, Ray Man, or Earthworm Jim game. Like, imagine this entirely playable, kind of nice-looking 4/10 game being the worst thing in your catalog; Mario's mainline games are THAT strong. Even Zelda can't promise that. Even Pokemon flubs some of its single-player experiences. Is there any other series with as many games as the mainline Mario where even the worst one is still basically okay, just kind of disappointing?

Tonkachi Mario
Kaizo Mario World
Super Mario 3D Land: Sometimes 3D, sometimes 2D, always 3D... graphically. This is possibly the most forgettable mainline Mario game. Like, seriously, 3D World at least has that it got an expansion seven years after the fact and has five playable characters. This is just the prototype for 3D World, which is already not exactly the best Mario game. Like, again to compare Mario to Zelda, Mario has way more "shitty random pointless little adventure" games than Zelda. Also, I looked up this game on the Wiki again and actually looked up the plot, and Peach manages to get kidnapped by Bowser twice. In a random side game. Embarrassing. I hope she gets kidnapped at least once in the new movie, just for old time's sake. Or I hope Bowser kidnaps Daisy in the next game, and Daisy is just excited to finally get some attention.

Wario Land (Virtual Boy): I'm told this is the best VB game, which given its library of 22 games, is maybe not the most impressive title ever. I watched part of the game on Youtube, and God, the VB color scheme, use of 3D, and double vision thing makes everything kind of painful to look at. The idea of Wario being able to launch himself into the background actually is kind of interesting and novel for the time, but like... I don't know, even in 1995, it's not THAT novel. God, some of the backgrounds are basically impossible to look at thanks to the color scheme. There's this one part with giant spiked balls swinging from the background to the foreground on a really a complex temple background, and I just don't want to look at it at all. And like... I know I gave a lot of shit to the Koopalings, but they ARE better than the bosses in this game, featuring such famous faces as "Dinosur Fish," "Sand Fish," "Tank and Operator," and "Demon Head." Look, I'm chalking this game up as "okay ideas and execution, but severly held back by the technology it was built with." Even if I'd owned this as a kid, I'm sure I wouldn't have bothered beating it. I can definitely see why this is the most loved VB game, but they should have known that the technology for VR wasn't there yet. It's still only kind of here, and we live like thirty years later.
