The reason Microsoft could do backwards compatibility is that every Xbox has been x86 as far as Im aware. So the newer Xboxes supported all the instruction sets etc.

PlayStation wasnt x86 until the PS4, and the PS3s CPU was notoriously complicated to develop for and emulate, etc.
The Xbox 360 wasn't x86, all the others (including the original) were.

PS1 and PS2 emulation is good enough for BC though. PSP and Vita are low power enough that emulating them shouldn't be a problem either. PS3 is the one system they could viably not include BC for on technical grounds.
